Grants and Contributions

About this information

In June 2016, as part of the Open Government Action Plan, the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat (TBS) committed to increasing the transparency and usefulness of grants and contribution data and subsequently launched the Guidelines on the Reporting of Grants and Contributions Awards, effective April 1, 2018.

The rules and principles governing government grants and contributions are outlined in the Treasury Board Policy on Transfer Payments. Transfer payments are transfers of money, goods, services or assets made from an appropriation to individuals, organizations or other levels of government, without the federal government directly receiving goods or services in return, but which may require the recipient to provide a report or other information subsequent to receiving payment. These expenditures are reported in the Public Accounts of Canada. The major types of transfer payments are grants, contributions and \'other transfer payments\'.

Included in this category, but not to be reported under proactive disclosure of awards, are (1) transfers to other levels of government such as Equalization payments as well as Canada Health and Social Transfer payments. (2) Grants and contributions reallocated or otherwise redistributed by the recipient to third parties; and (3) information that would normally be withheld under the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act.

The project team will clarify objectives, receive archival training and implement new skills to catalogue, digitize and process archival materials for future access. The team will include staff, community members and leaders (including members of the Archives Society of Alberta), and invited archivists. The organization will acquire an archives consultant to help build local capacity and develop a plan to establish the organization’s archives.

Digitizing Inuit Artistic Heritage

Agreement Number:

2021-0118

Duration: from May 15, 2020 to Mar 31, 2023
Description:

This project highlights the contributions and cultural resilience of Inuit artists, and it will enhance public appreciation for their art. Inuit artists face unique and systemic barriers to visibility by the Canadian public. Their art form is poorly understood despite being a key piece of Canada’s national artistic identity.

The Inuit Art Foundation (IAF) archive spans the development of modern Inuit art and represents artists from all media. The archive includes every community within Inuit Nunangat (Inuit regions) and reflects the incredible range of cultural and artistic practices among Inuit artists. This project will increase awareness of and access to a greater proportion of the IAF archive.

Preserving the Past for Future Generations: Digitizing the Documentary Heritage of Remote Northern Communities

Agreement Number:

2021-0015

Duration: from May 15, 2020 to Mar 31, 2022
Description:

The Pitquhirnikkut Ilihautiniq/Kitikmeot Heritage Society will digitize 1,000 35-mm slides that capture unseen moments in the lives of people, past and present, in the Central Canadian Arctic. The Laserich Collection offers insight into life in remote Inuit communities. These images span decades and capture everyday lives, people and places.

No other collection offers this volume of information and such a broad context of life in the North. It will enhance Canadian understanding of northern communities and help them to preserve and share their documentary heritage. The organization will share images through its Inuit Knowledge Bank and engage with community Elders to identify the peoples, places and content in the photographs.
