Grants and Contributions
About this information
In June 2016, as part of the Open Government Action Plan, the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat (TBS) committed to increasing the transparency and usefulness of grants and contribution data and subsequently launched the Guidelines on the Reporting of Grants and Contributions Awards, effective April 1, 2018.
The rules and principles governing government grants and contributions are outlined in the Treasury Board Policy on Transfer Payments. Transfer payments are transfers of money, goods, services or assets made from an appropriation to individuals, organizations or other levels of government, without the federal government directly receiving goods or services in return, but which may require the recipient to provide a report or other information subsequent to receiving payment. These expenditures are reported in the Public Accounts of Canada. The major types of transfer payments are grants, contributions and \'other transfer payments\'.
Included in this category, but not to be reported under proactive disclosure of awards, are (1) transfers to other levels of government such as Equalization payments as well as Canada Health and Social Transfer payments. (2) Grants and contributions reallocated or otherwise redistributed by the recipient to third parties; and (3) information that would normally be withheld under the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act.

LSALT Drug Development program to mitigate COVID-19 related Organ (Lung and Kidney) damage and inflammation
1003639
The project targets the prevention of acute organ inflammation injury in the lungs and kidneys of patients who have moderate to severe COVID-19 and other diseases. LSALT peptide is a novel drug candidate and selective dipeptidase-1 inhibitor which blocks injury in the lungs and kidneys by reducing leukocyte recruitment and inflammation in these organs.
This project focuses on completing the clinical and commercial drug development tasks needed to obtain regulatory approval for LSALT peptide. A successful project will advance the LSALT peptide as a new therapeutic that will reduce organ inflammation complications in high risk patients, increase survival rates and provide resiliency in the Canadian healthcare system for future pandemics.

Next generation technologies to aid medication adherence
998468
Poor prescription adherence is a cause in —50% of hospital admissions, causing annual deaths of —125 000 and over $100 billion in annual costs to the healthcare industry1. This project will investigate new technologies to monitor and aid adherence to prescribed medication plans, in order to enable seniors to live longer, healthier and more independent lives. The project will be split into two concurrent work streams (WS). The first WS will focus on development of next generation smart blister packaging. This project builds on almost a decade of expertise in smart packaging at Jones Healthcare Group (JHG), much of which was gained during the Printable Electronics Flagship Program in collaboration with NRC. In particular, JHG now have significant experience in the manufacture, distribution and testing of smart blister packaging, based on a multiple trials performed in recent years. This WS aims to improve manufacturability and add further functionality to smart blister packaging in order to promote adherence and enhance accessibility. The second WS will look at other technologies to aid medication adherence. This will include technologies to monitor liquid medication, as well as methods to monitor other pharmaceutical dispensing technologies. These technologies will enable older adults to live independent lives for longer by improving medication efficiency, reducing hospital admissions, and reassuring family and friends.
