Grants and Contributions

The “Catalyst Grant: Addressing Musculoskeletal Conditions and Arthritis in Canadians” is expected to:

• Support original, high quality projects that have the potential to generate innovative research, research tools, techniques, devices, inventions, or methods that will translate into a clinical or health services improvement for Canadians within 5-7 years;
• Facilitate team formation and build patient-oriented research capacity by encouraging partnerships amongst patients, patient communities, patient organizations and health charities, researchers, health care professionals and health system decision makers or policy makers;
• Generate preliminary observations, data or knowledge to stimulate research in areas where there is a substantial burden of disease in musculoskeletal conditions and arthritis in Canada, as identified by the respective communities.

This funding opportunity is expected to:
•Catalyze patient-oriented research aligned with the SPOR Patient Engagement Framework and SPOR Capacity Development Framework by:
¿Developing partnerships amongst patients and patient communities, researchers, health care professionals and health system decision-makers or policy-makers;
¿Mobilizing the above partnerships to develop and conduct a patient-oriented research project or projects; and,
¿Informing future applications for more comprehensive patient-oriented research grants.

This funding opportunity is expected to:
•Catalyze patient-oriented research aligned with the SPOR Patient Engagement Framework and SPOR Capacity Development Framework by:
¿Developing partnerships amongst patients and patient communities, researchers, health care professionals and health system decision-makers or policy-makers;
¿Mobilizing the above partnerships to develop and conduct a patient-oriented research project or projects; and,
¿Informing future applications for more comprehensive patient-oriented research grants.

Scale and Spread of Successful Existing CBPHC and eHealth Innovations grant is expected to:
• Support the adoption of successful CBPHC and eHealth innovations to new sites, new settings, or new populations.
• Support knowledge translation to inform practice, clinical care, policy, and/or decision making.
• Build and support partnerships between researchers and health system decision makers.

The Measuring the impacts of financial and organizational restructuring of public health opportunity is expected to:
•Generate evidence on how changes to the funding, organization and/or delivery of public health services impact population health, health systems and health equity;
•Improve data and methods for measuring the benefits, costs, harms and trade-offs of changes in public health funding, organization and /or delivery; and
•Develop evidence that can be used to inform future decisions or policies related to public health resourcing and organization.

• The CIHR Institute of Aging (CIHR-IA) will fund applications that are relevant to one of the Institute of Aging’s Strategic Directions as described below:

• Strategic Direction 1: Health and Wellness over the Trajectory of Aging

Priority Areas:
o Life trajectory as a determinant of healthy and satisfying aging
o Added life to the later years

• Strategic Direction 2: Facing the Complex Health Challenges of an Older Population

Priority Areas:
o Understanding, preventing and addressing multiple chronic conditions
o Facing the challenge of dementia
o Recognizing new emerging aging populations
o Ensuring the adaptation of healthcare and services to an aging population
o Informing late-life care and decisions

The objective of this funding opportunity is to catalyze and support research efforts of Canadian researchers to use the available CLSA data in order to better understand how (individually and in combination) the biological, medical, psychological, social, lifestyle and/or economic aspects of people’s lives have an impact in both maintaining health and in the development of disease and disability as people age.

This funding opportunity is expected to:

• Advance knowledge through the analysis of existing cohorts, data platforms and/or administrative datasets specific to one of the research areas above.

Through the Institute's programs, researchers address a wide range of health concerns related to infection and immunity including disease mechanisms, disease prevention and treatment, and health promotion through public policy.
