Support entrepreneurship development through Planet Hatch 2.0 programming

• This project is part of the 2017 Humanitarian Response Plan for the West Bank and Gaza Strip. Projects under this appeal help to reduce the vulnerability of Palestinians, especially women and children, affected by the ongoing crisis. Of the 4.8 million people who live in the West Bank and Gaza, the United Nations estimates that approximately two million will need some form of humanitarian assistance in 2017. Palestinians endure high rates of poverty, unemployment, and food insecurity. Internal displacement and recurrent conflict have eroded coping mechanisms and necessitate a humanitarian response focused on protection.

With Global Affairs Canada’s support, Development and Peace aims to support approximately 320 households, at least 50 of which are headed by women, to make upgrades to their sub-standard shelters. The project is built on the premise that if acutely vulnerable families live in adequate, safe shelters that meet the needs of women, girls, the elderly, and people with disabilities, their vulnerability is reduced. Households receive assistance to plan the needed upgrades and implement improvements directly or through contractors.

This project aims to strengthen the Haitian Border Police’s capacity to enforce security, to recognize the specific rights and needs of migrants and to equip the Haitian Border Police with dormitories, offices and equipment tailored to the needs of the border police officers.

Project activities include: (1) sensitising Haitian Border Police on key border management and protection issues which can enhance their understanding of migrants’ rights and international standards; (2) equiping the Haitian Border Police with dormitories and offices to reinforce its capacity; (3) purchasing logistics material (transportation, communication, furniture and supplies for the new facilities; and (4) providing specialized equipment for the Haitian Border Police to allow the newly deployed officers to effectively perform border control functions.

The project supports the recruitment of up to 15 young Canadians through the United Nations Junior Professional Officers (JPO) Program. It is part of a larger contribution to the UN JPO Program which allows young Canadians to be assigned, as professional employees, to six United Nations organisations (UNDP, UNICEF, UNFPA, WHO, WFP and UNHCR). The Program provides these young Canadians with the opportunity to gain practical professional experience in international development through the United Nations system.

The project provides support to Education Cannot Wait (ECW), a global fund that aims to transform the delivery of education in emergencies. ECW focuses on joining governments, humanitarian actors and development efforts for a more rapid response to the educational needs of children and youth affected by crises. The fund is innovative through its focus on developing new approaches to bridge the gap between humanitarian assistance and development in the education sector, and engaging the global business community through innovative financing. It is designed to increase political mobilization, raise multi-year funding, improve coordination of different stakeholders, and strengthen organizations’ capacity and accountability for education responses during crises. The fund aims to reach 1.4 million children and youth in the first year of operations, working towards the ultimate goal of reaching an estimated total of 75 million affected children and youth through ECW (and other delivery mechanisms) by 2030.

Support to ECW is advancing a focus on the poorest and most vulnerable, including out of school children and youth, and helping to support fragile states.

Project activities include: (1) mobilizing local leaders and community members in 20 communities on women’s empowerment and SRMNH; (2) creating and supporting networks of trained community-based health practitioners with links to health facilities; (3) designing and delivering an in-hospital initial and continuing education program; (4) strengthening the management of training institutions and training new health practitioners; (5) building or rehabilitating and equipping clinics for maternal and reproductive health; and (6) disseminating gender-responsive information and research on SRMNH.

To share research and operating experience related to the Molten Salt Reactor Experiment (MSRE) and the EBR-II sodium fast reactor

The project is entitled 'A comprehensive quantitative model of the ionosphere applied against ePOP/CASSIOPE and Swarm observations'. The project team will develop a computer-based model to explore the connections between the Earth's magnetic field and its upper atmosphere that can adversely affect ground and space-based technology. The team will use the model to interpret data collected by Canada's CASSIOPE satellite and by Europe's Swarm satellites.
