Grants and Contributions

About this information

In June 2016, as part of the Open Government Action Plan, the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat (TBS) committed to increasing the transparency and usefulness of grants and contribution data and subsequently launched the Guidelines on the Reporting of Grants and Contributions Awards, effective April 1, 2018.

The rules and principles governing government grants and contributions are outlined in the Treasury Board Policy on Transfer Payments. Transfer payments are transfers of money, goods, services or assets made from an appropriation to individuals, organizations or other levels of government, without the federal government directly receiving goods or services in return, but which may require the recipient to provide a report or other information subsequent to receiving payment. These expenditures are reported in the Public Accounts of Canada. The major types of transfer payments are grants, contributions and \'other transfer payments\'.

Included in this category, but not to be reported under proactive disclosure of awards, are (1) transfers to other levels of government such as Equalization payments as well as Canada Health and Social Transfer payments. (2) Grants and contributions reallocated or otherwise redistributed by the recipient to third parties; and (3) information that would normally be withheld under the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act.

OSIRIS-3: CubeSat Payload Design and Demonstration

Agreement Number:

21FASASB09

Duration: from Mar 25, 2022 to Dec 30, 2024
Description:

Today’s space sector is characterized by the current “space 2.0” revolution in accessibility to low-earth orbit, and the proliferation and high-performance capabilities of modern CubeSat platforms. Given this context, the development of OSIRIS-3 - building strongly from the original instrument design approach - is particularly relevant.

This project will take an important and early step to continue the OSIRIS data record into the future by developing a 6U CubeSat sized OSIRIS (OSIRIS-3) optical spectrometer and demonstrating the fidelity of this prototype with a test flight on a stratospheric balloon.

The proposed development of the OSIRIS-3 CubeSat prototype is a critical step to an inexpensive and proven way to continue to monitor O3, NO2 and aerosol for Canadian applications. Indeed, with projected increases in forest fires due to climate change, and
interest in the potential for “climate geo-engineering” with intentional stratospheric
aerosol creation to curb greenhouse gas warming, a sustainable and low-cost OSIRS CubeSat
instrument will be highly relevant to Canadian needs to monitor and understand these critical
changes.

A Hell of a Phase Curve: Mapping the Surface and Atmosphere of a Lava Planet

Duration: from Mar 24, 2022 to Jan 31, 2024
Description:

Following the JWST ERS and Cycle 1 GO Announcement of Opportunity published on June 14, 2021, the CSA is providing funding via a Grant Agreement to the university to conduct their research using the JWST data.

The project will monitor K2-141b for three complete orbits of the planet with the MIRI LRS on the James Webb Space Telescope for just under 21 hours of time. These observations will allow measurements the vertical atmospheric structure on the dayside of the planet, to determine the presence of an extended atmosphere via the planet's nightside temperature, and to search for rock clouds that might form as the supersonic winds blowing towards the nightside cool and condense.

A SEARCH FOR THE GIANT PLANETS THAT DRIVE WHITE DWARF ACCRETION

Duration: from Mar 24, 2022 to Apr 30, 2024
Description:

Following the JWST ERS and Cycle 1 GO Announcement of Opportunity published on June 14, 2021, the CSA is providing funding via a Grant Agreement to the university to conduct their research using the JWST data.

White dwarfs offer a novel alternative to measure the composition of exoplanets. In the atmosphere of some white dwarfs, spectral signature of a wide range of atoms is observed (Si, C, O, Fe, etc). Analysis shows that the relative content of these atoms matches that of asteroids in the Solar system. These and the fact that those white dwarfs also harbor an accretion disk, means that planets do survive the red giant phase at the end of a star life. This project aims at finding such planets by direct imaging.
