This project targets the villages of Niodior, Dionewar and Falia in the Saloum Delta in Senegal. It aims to enhance the economic, social and environmental development of these communities in a sustainable way and to improve the living, working and health conditions of the inhabitants.

The two main areas of focus are: 1) the governance of the shellfish resources processing units, a more inclusive access to the units, the creation of micro-businesses, and sustainability; and 2) innovative product commercialization, sustainable use of resources and competencies reinforcement. Innovations include: (a) the implementation of a new processing unit management; (b) the start-up of micro-businesses in a green, circular economy, under a female governance system; and (c) the development of an innovative distribution chain with a diversification of the processed products offer, and a supply of fresh products with a high level of added value. The project aims to evolve the current business model of the three processing units in order to improve the inclusion of women processing workers within the units, to move towards a more entrepreneurial management, and to integrate a new generation of young women managers, who more easily assimilate new technologies as well as clients’ concerns and current societal needs. The project guides the women and girls and, more broadly, young people, towards expressing their economic leadership in order to improve gender equity. The project also allows young people to fully carry out their role as a lever for change, in terms of both governance methods and the adaptation of these coastal communities to climate change.

The project includes the following activities: 1) delivering a continuous training program to women managers and young women identified for succession; 2) developing a sponsorship program where business women mentor women managers with the purpose of initiating an entrepreneurial and cost-effective management of the processing units; 3) creating a board of directors for each unit that includes women representatives from each group of women, businesswomen and men representatives; 4) a study of the implementation of an innovative distribution network without an intermediary is available; and 5) scientific follow-up, stock monitoring and compliance with the development plan to ensure the sustainable development of shellfish resources.

The project is expected to benefit the 14,000 people living in the three villages targeted by the project.

The Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles is carrying out this project in partnership with the Institut Universitaire des Pêches et d'Aquaculture de Dakar (IUPA) and the Institut de Technologie Agroalimentaire de Dakar (ITA).

This project is a part of a multi-donor, global initiative that aims to reduce vulnerability to climate change for women and men, by improving the quality and integration of gender equality into national adaptation planning and action (a process that facilitates the integration of climate change adaptation into relevant new and existing policies) in developing countries. Projects activities include: (1) providing long and short-term in-country technical assistance; (2) facilitating peer-learning events between government policy-makers; and (3) developing and disseminating knowledge development and policy analysis. The project also works to improve the capacity of government actors and other stakeholders, particularly in small island developing states and in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The World Food Programme (WFP) is the United Nations’ frontline agency in the fight against hunger. It responds to emergencies, saves lives by quickly getting food to the hungry, and works to help prevent hunger in the future.
In humanitarian emergencies, WFP focuses on providing targeted food assistance to reduce acute malnutrition and food insecurity, and to protect livelihoods. As the global lead agency for logistics and emergency telecommunications, WFP also plays a major role in providing common services for the humanitarian community. It transports passengers undertaking humanitarian work, carries light cargo for humanitarian agencies, and carries out emergency medical and security evacuations.
Project activities include: (1) distributing food; (2) supplementary feeding for children under five years of age as well as pregnant and lactating women; (3) emergency school feeding programs; (4) vouchers and cash transfers for food; and (5) food for work. With the support of GAC and other donors, WFP is providing emergency food assistance to more than 90 million people facing famine, malnutrition and severe food insecurity.

A contribution to support the building of a new mechanical wastewater treatment plant at the site of the existing lagoon facility, and re-using the existing lagoons as part of the overall wastewater treatment process.
