The project will increase the capacity of the organization to meet the complex needs of victims of human trafficking. The project will provide victims with basic needs to restore their dignity after trauma and abuse in an attempt to break their dependence on their trafficker. Access to basic needs will enable staff and law enforcement to build therapeutic relationships and establish a level of trust to ensure their safety and security.

The organization will provide an advocacy program for victims of human trafficking to deliver services responsive to their needs with the goal of promoting their physical, psychological and social recovery. The program will connect victims to resources and supports including housing, trauma counselling, employment and education assistance, addiction services and legal supports. As part of this program, the organization will also provide training to Crown attorneys, police, judiciary and community partner agencies, on the unique factors facing these young women and how to best support them through trauma informed practices, as well as identification of risk factors that impede the process for young women.

The first component of this project will support the improvement of tools and enhance services for victims of domestic violence. The second component will ensure respect for victim's rights in the justice system, which are outlined in the Canadian Victims Bill of Rights (CVBR). To enhance the recognition and participation of victims, particularly those in remote areas, mobile video conferencing technology will be installed to strengthen links between justice system stakeholders and victims. The project will also serve to inform victims of their rights and possible legal remedies related to the CVBR.

The organization will hire a Human Trafficking Victim Support Worker to provide direct services to victims of human trafficking and to develop and facilitate training programs for victim service workers, first-responders, judges and medical staff in the counties they serve. The goals of the project are to enhance and promote physical, psychological and social recovery and to address the complex needs of victims of human trafficking.

Canada officially became a member of the Venice Commission on June 12, 2019. Canada's participation as a member of the Venice Commission is consistent with Justice Canada's mandate, policies and programs promoting respect for constitutionalism, the rule of law, and the administration of justice (including judicial independence), human rights, and the protection of minorities. This project provides payment for Canada's annual contribution as a member of the Venice Commission in 2019.

The Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police will organize and host the 2020 National Criminal Justice Symposium on Alternatives to Custody. The Symposium will bring together up to 100 participants in the field of criminal justice to consider a range of issues central to the use of and alternatives to custody in Canada, and to develop recommendations regarding the administration of criminal justice at all levels of the Canadian government.

This project is to support travel to the 2019 National Restorative Justice Symposium. The Symposium is a national gathering that brings together representatives from community organizations, policy-makers, and restorative justice leaders to share innovative approaches.

The IAEA will provide comprehensive technical assistance in 15 states in Latin America and the Caribbean (Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay) to develop and/or strengthen their respective national regulatory infrastructure for nuclear security and radiation safety.
