Grants and Contributions

About this information

In June 2016, as part of the Open Government Action Plan, the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat (TBS) committed to increasing the transparency and usefulness of grants and contribution data and subsequently launched the Guidelines on the Reporting of Grants and Contributions Awards, effective April 1, 2018.

The rules and principles governing government grants and contributions are outlined in the Treasury Board Policy on Transfer Payments. Transfer payments are transfers of money, goods, services or assets made from an appropriation to individuals, organizations or other levels of government, without the federal government directly receiving goods or services in return, but which may require the recipient to provide a report or other information subsequent to receiving payment. These expenditures are reported in the Public Accounts of Canada. The major types of transfer payments are grants, contributions and \'other transfer payments\'.

Included in this category, but not to be reported under proactive disclosure of awards, are (1) transfers to other levels of government such as Equalization payments as well as Canada Health and Social Transfer payments. (2) Grants and contributions reallocated or otherwise redistributed by the recipient to third parties; and (3) information that would normally be withheld under the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act.

AI for precision discovery on associations in biological systems

Agreement Number:

947406

Duration: from Mar 26, 2020 to Mar 25, 2023
Description:

Precise discovery on the causal associations between phenotype (such as human complex diseases) and underlining genetic variations is one of the fundamental questions in life sciences, and has an essential role in translational medicine. To date, many studies have been conducted to infer disease-relevant genes/biomarkers, but only a limited number of signals have been experimentally confirmed to be causative. The cell heterogeneity of the complex tissues is a major known factor contributing to this limitation. In this project, we aim to precisely identify genetic-phenotype associations in a cell-subtype specific manner by combining massively parallel single-cell-based CRISPR knockdown or knockout screening and advanced AI technologies, such as deep generative models. In particular, activities will focus on applying and developing AI methods to mine the real information behind the massive single cell data and infer the precise genetic-phenotype signals. Research will also make use of AI technologies to design gene and cell therapeutic interventions to target the identified signals.

Smart agri-food supply chain digital twinning

Agreement Number:

947416

Duration: from Mar 26, 2020 to Mar 31, 2023
Description:

The goal is to investigate intelligent management of supply chain digital twinning with application to the Global Agri-Food Value Chain (GAVC) that improves food quality and safety. GAVCs often span across the globe and involves various organizations that vary in production approaches and standards with regulatory actors and government regimes that vary in competence and transparency. The global distribution of agri-food products is creating longer and more complex supply chains that obscure traditional methods of oversight, coordination and collaboration. In recent years, there is an increased interest in the digitalisation and digital transformation of production processes and supply chains resulting from the acceleration of technological development such as the fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0). In this project, the focus on artificial intelligence solutions to integrate value chains across firms and manage the infusion of data to address many challenges such as complexity, uncertainty, risk, visibility, collaboration, cost, and sustainability.
