Grants and Contributions
About this information
In June 2016, as part of the Open Government Action Plan, the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat (TBS) committed to increasing the transparency and usefulness of grants and contribution data and subsequently launched the Guidelines on the Reporting of Grants and Contributions Awards, effective April 1, 2018.
The rules and principles governing government grants and contributions are outlined in the Treasury Board Policy on Transfer Payments. Transfer payments are transfers of money, goods, services or assets made from an appropriation to individuals, organizations or other levels of government, without the federal government directly receiving goods or services in return, but which may require the recipient to provide a report or other information subsequent to receiving payment. These expenditures are reported in the Public Accounts of Canada. The major types of transfer payments are grants, contributions and \'other transfer payments\'.
Included in this category, but not to be reported under proactive disclosure of awards, are (1) transfers to other levels of government such as Equalization payments as well as Canada Health and Social Transfer payments. (2) Grants and contributions reallocated or otherwise redistributed by the recipient to third parties; and (3) information that would normally be withheld under the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act.

P008559001: January 2020 – In 2020, there are an estimated 4.1 million Iraqis in need of humanitarian assistance, of which 1.77 million are in acute need. Out of the 6 million displaced people during the conflict against Daesh, more than 1.4 million people remain internally displaced. Those directly affected by the conflict against Daesh, particularly those who were displaced and whose lives and livelihoods were uprooted and destroyed, continue to require humanitarian assistance to meet their basic needs.
With GAC’s support, Oxfam-Québec is providing water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and protection assistance to vulnerable internally displaced persons (IDPs), returnees and host communities in Iraq. Project activities include: (1) rehabilitating water supply systems and water treatment plants; (2) providing sanitation facilities and solid and medical waste management systems in health centres; (3) delivering hygiene promotion activities; (4) providing emergency cash-for-protection grants or multi-purpose cash assistance to vulnerable women-headed households; (5) providing psychosocial support activities; and (6) providing training to community-based structures, including women and youth groups, on protection monitoring, case identification, and referrals.

Strengthening SRHR and Services for Migrants from Venezuela and Host Communities
7419243 P008744001
The project aims to contribute to the guarantee of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) for migrants and refugees from Venezuela and host communities in Colombia and Ecuador, with a gender sensitive approach. Project activities include: (1) improving knowledge and agency of women and girls, migrants and refugees to exercise their SRHR; (2) empowering national/local authorities and civil society organizations in the promotion of comprehensive gender responsive SRHR services; (3) strengthening coordination mechanisms for comprehensive gender responsive SRHR rights and response to women and girls and migrants from Venezuela and host communities; and (4) increasing capacity and assistance on gender-based violence prevention and gender sensitive responses from national/local authorities and services providers.

Improvement of pulse protein flavour and quality through breeding and processing
946231
Peas (Pisum sativum) are one of the main pulse crops, extensively grown in Western Canada. The demand for peas and their fractions continue to increase due to their known nutritional and health benefits, as well as growing demand for gluten free products. However, the beany flavour of pea protein presents challenge in using pea ingredients in a broad range of food products. This study will develop novel processing technology for pea protein using hydrodynamic cavitation and membrane filtration.

Exploiting Collateral Sensitivity to Win the War Against Antimicrobial Resistance
946580
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a serious and growing problem in the treatment of infectious disease. Broadly, the potential to use combat AMR using collateral sensitivity, a phenomenon whereby resistance to one antimicrobial results in sensitivity to other drugs will be examined. The hypothesis that collateral sensitivities can be used to slow the emergence of AMR will be tested. The central premise of this hypothesis is that the use of one drug will select against mutations that confer resistance to a second drug. For example, if streptomycin resistance mutations confer sensitivity to chloramphenicol, then treatment of a sensitive population of bacteria with chloramphenicol should slow the emergence of streptomycin resistance by selecting against specific, collaterally sensitive mutations. The team will test this hypothesis using a combination of conventional mutation rate assays and sequencing. This work will provide crucial tests of the central logic of using collateral sensitivity to fight AMR; such tests have not thus far been carried out.

Two-dimensional optical phase arrays for satellite communication
947308
Inter-satellite optical communication requires accurate pointing and tracking capabilities to ensure a reliable free-space link between satellites is established. In addition, correction of atmospheric fluctuations is necessary to allow for high-bandwidth connectivity between satellites and ground stations. Current existing systems with adaptive optics are large and fragile, potentially slow, with reliability issues that are unsuited for satellite-based systems. In this proposed research project, a solid-state integrated system compatible with CMOS technology will be exploited, without any mechanical moving parts. The proposed solution could be highly beneficial in terms of fabrication volume, cost, and robustness, especially for miniaturized satellites. The proposed research, if successful, could provide immediate benefit to established technologies, in the near term, e.g. LIDAR systems; and in the long term, will have direct impact to satellite free-space optical communications.
