This project supports the World Health Organization in improving equitable health and well-being, especially those experiencing marginalization and vulnerable populations, in at least eight countries during the COVID-19 pandemic. Project activities include: (1) designing and implementing innovative models of care for equitable access; and (2) providing technical assistance to implement guidance, tools and training on key areas of primary healthcare system governance, such as strengthening health workforce capacity.

This project builds on Canada’s funding to the Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND) during COVID-19. The initial project aims at accelerate the roll-out of safe, affordable, and effective COVID-19 diagnostics in Low- and Lower-Middle Income Countries. This project supports FIND in using testing technologies developed during COVID-19 to expand the range of diseases detected with a single test.

The project provides institutional support to advance the Center for Global Development’s research activities related to the three following thematic: COVID-19 response and recovery, health systems strengthening, and sustainable development finance to help bridge the evidence gaps for effective international assistance policies and programming.

January 2021 - The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is a defining global health crisis of modern times, with over 2,000,000 recorded deaths worldwide. In countries that are already experiencing humanitarian crises and have highly vulnerable populations, COVID-19 has placed even more pressure on essential services, infrastructure, and systems and resulted in adverse effects on the provision of and use of health and protection services by women and girls.

February 2021 - The rapid spread of COVID-19 pandemic has overwhelmed healthcare systems, disrupted economies and altered livelihoods in many parts of the world. People living in crisis-affected settings, often in over-crowded areas, are at greater risk of contracting COVID-19. Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) provides medical humanitarian operations to vulnerable populations at risk of contracting and spreading the virus in countries affected by war, armed conflict and other situations of violence.

With GAC’s support, MSF aims to minimize the consequences of the pandemic on affected populations through activities that include: (1) providing direct patient care to those affected by COVID-19; (2) increasing access to primary and secondary medical care in places where gaps exist in local health systems as a result of COVID-19; and (3) increasing awareness in affected communities about the virus and prevention measures.

March 2021 – Following the outbreak of violence in Northern Rakhine State in August 2017, more than 700,000 Rohingya people crossed from Myanmar into Bangladesh over a period of several months. Currently, an estimated 855,000 Rohingya refugees live in 34 highly congested settlements in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. The speed and scale of the influx resulted in significant humanitarian needs.

With GAC’s support, the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) provides comprehensive protection programming for children at heightened risk of trafficking and abuse, focusing on prevention and response through a community-based approach. Project activities include: (1) providing gender-sensitive case management support for child survivors and children and adolescents at risk of protection violations; (2) providing family tracing and reunification support to unaccompanied and separated children; (3) supporting caregivers of vulnerable and at-risk children and adolescents with individualized protection support and multi-purpose cash assistance; and (4) providing training to local agencies and community volunteers on identification, referral and response for child protection cases.

P010168001: January 2021 – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) provides international protection and assistance to the world’s refugees, stateless persons, asylum seekers, and in some instances, internally displaced persons, including in response to the secondary impacts of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The UNHCR searches for lasting solutions to their situations.
