March 2018 – Uganda hosts the largest number of refugees in Africa, more than 1.4 million, with roughly two thirds of them having arrived from South Sudan since July 2016. This large and rapid influx has strained the humanitarian response capacity in northern Uganda to near breaking. New refugee settlements almost immediately reach full capacity, while service providers struggle to meet the most basic needs of the community. Overall, South Sudanese make up more than three quarters of the refugee population in Uganda (more than 1 million people).

With GAC’s support, the Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR) is providing healthcare (including sexual and reproductive health), water and sanitation, protection, and livelihoods opportunities to an estimated 40,000 South Sudanese refugees and host communities in the Lamwo and Moyo districts of Uganda. Project activities include: (1) providing training, equipment and supplies to local health facilities; (2) constructing or rehabilitating household and institutional sanitation facilities; (3) awareness raising campaigns to combat sexual and gender-based violence; and (4) supporting village savings and loans associations and livelihoods training.

March 2018 – Ethiopia hosts the second largest number of refugees in Africa, nearly one million people. Approximatelyy 40% of these are from South Sudan and now live in the remote Gambella region of western Ethiopia. Although safe from the conflict and insecurity that forced them to flee, many refugees are still suffering from their effects, including acute malnutrition and trauma related to violence. With limited local options for self-sustainability and little chance of returning home in the near future, most refugee households remain reliant on ongoing international assistance to meet their basic needs.

With GAC’s support, Concern Worldwide is providing nutritional assistance to an estimated 19,500 South Sudanese refugees and host communities in the Gambella region of Ethiopia. Activities include: (1) targeted therapeutic feeding of acutely malnourished children; (2) blanket supplementary feeding for households with vulnerable children; and (3) the provision of inputs to enhance dietary diversity amongst benficiary households.

With GAC’s support, Doctors Without Borders Canada is providing support for much-needed healthcare, including sexual and reproductive health, for an estimated 90,000 South Sudanese refugees and host communities in the Arua and Yumbe districts of Uganda.

This initiative contributes to improve the credibility, transparency and women participation in the municipal election what will take place in October 2018. Canada provides financial support to Associação PROGRESSO to promote empower young university students to work as electoral observers and train women journalist from community radio to better observe and provide timely reporting on the election process.

The implementation of automation into a facility/manufacturing plant lowers the consumption of energy by increasing efficiency of the process. This reduces the facilities carbon footprint. The new hire will help improve our automation productivity. We also plan to teach our new hires environmentally friendly methods for electrical, controls and robot design. The new hire will be trained in implementing engineering methods that result in modular design and technical applications that determine and identify resource efficiencies when applying engineering.x000D
