This funding will support the organization in having conversations to support Justice, Canada, in the shared priority areas of working with Indigenous partners to research and inform Indigenous justice processes that promote rehabilitation and healing, particularly through Inuit women’s experiences of justice. These discussions would also support Elder engagement within Justice institutions and knowledge sharing about culturally appropriate support for Inuit women interacting with the justice system.

Participation in non-binding exploratory discussions to assess the specific needs of the Atikamekw community of Opitciwan in criminal justice for youth.

The funding will support two justice forums for Mi’kmaq leadership. The focus of the first forum will be on the implementation of bylaws and policing challenges and best practices. The second forum will focus on furthering discussions about access to justice and navigating the system. The aim of the forums is to improve access and equity for Indigenous people going through the justice system, thereby supporting successful reintegration outcomes.

This project aims to assist Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Inc., to support them in engaging with their members, to participate in the evaluation of their “Intoxicants By-law” Pilot project, and to conduct the evaluation of the “Protocol relating to the Enforcement and Prosecution of By-Laws”.

Through the established Inuit-Crown Partnership Committee structures, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, Inuit Treaty Organizations and federal partners will co-develop a work plan to organize and plan the work for the year ahead.

The recipient agrees to contribute to addressing the overrepresentation of Indigenous people in the criminal justice system through Public awareness and prevention, Diversion, Dispute resolution or mediation, including civil and family mediation, Sentencing options, Gladue Aftercare/Post-sentence supports, Support to victims, and, Offender reintegration.

This project delivers the initial phase of the Indigenous Justice Strategy in Manitoba by establishing a First Nations–led Tripartite Table to implement the Aboriginal Justice Inquiry under Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Call for Justice 5.1.

The National Indigenous Justice Strategy Engagement Project would encompass three primary components: team development and reporting; community prioritization engagement; and, collaborative costing exercises with government and Indigenous partners.

The Elsipogtog Justice Strategic Planning Project is the first step toward implementing the Indigenous Justice Strategy (IJS) in a way that reflects Mi'kmaq values and community priorities. The expected outcomes include a comprehensive Justice Strategic Plan that defines short- and long-term goals, stronger partnerships with provincial and federal justice systems, and a culturally safe, community-driven justice model that reduces harm and promotes healing.

The Circle to Strength project will equip justice professionals with a referral-based toolbox for youth from the Mi’kmaw communities that are in conflict with the law and will support the development of a referral system, a gaps analysis, new program development and evaluation.
