The CIHR Institute of Cancer Research (CIHR-ICR) has a mandate to support research that reduces the burden of cancer on individuals and families through prevention strategies, screening, diagnosis, effective treatments, psycho-social support systems, and palliation.

This PA will fund Cancer research in the following priority areas:

• Cancer Prevention and/or Early Detection of Cancer
o research that prevents the onset of cancer (lowers cancer risk) and/or reduces the severity of the disease through early detection when it is at its most treatable.
• Cancer Survivorship
o research that mitigates the challenges experienced along the cancer survivorship journey and improves the health outcomes for cancer survivors of all ages from the time of their cancer diagnosis until the time of their death or entry into end-of-life care.
o specifically in the areas of:
¿ Late & Long-Term Effects
¿ Survivors’ Experiences & Outcomes
¿ Models of Care
o This PA will not fund research focused on improving end-of-life care.

• This PA supports research that creates new knowledge and/or moves it into practice in the health system, communities, workplaces, and in the daily lives of Canadians.

This Priority Announcement (PA) is led by Canada’s Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research in partnership with CIHR’s Knowledge Mobilization Strategies team and aims to support Patient-Oriented Research (POR) with a focus on mobilizing knowledge for research impacts.

Patient-Oriented Research, which is foundational to evidence-informed health care, refers to a continuum of research that engages patients and communities, including People with Lived and Living Experience (PWLLE), as partners throughout the research process, focusses on patient-identified priorities, and improves patient outcomes. This research, conducted by multidisciplinary teams in collaboration with relevant partners, aims to apply the knowledge generated to improve health outcomes for Canadians.

Canada’s¿Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR)¿is a national coalition of federal, provincial and territorial partners (patients and informal caregivers, community members, health authorities, academic health centres, charities, philanthropic organizations, private sector, etc.) dedicated to the integration of patient-oriented research into care. The vision for SPOR is that Canada will demonstrably improve health outcomes and enhance the health care experience for patients through the integration of evidence at all levels of the health care system.

CIHR is committed to leverage the power of research to accelerate global health equity for all. The CIHR Framework for Action on Global Health Research 2021-2026 recognizes that CIHR must work globally because today’s most pressing health problems, and many of the most effective strategies to prevent, contain, and address them, are global. In alignment with this Framework, this priority announcement aims to grow global health research capacity and excellence.
Funding will be provided for applications that have a primary focus on global health research (as per CIHR’s definition) and that are relevant to one of the mandates below:
• Centre for Research on Pandemic Preparedness and Health Emergencies (CRPPHE)
• Institute of Population and Public Health (IPPH)

Sport science has traditionally centered male athletes, either ignoring, or extrapolating findings to female athletes. Focusing on sex as a biological variable and gender as a social variable, this priority announcement (PA) aims to address research gaps in understanding the health of female athletes in the context of organized sport participation.
This PA is the result of a partnership between the CIHR Institute of Gender and Health (CIHR-IGH) and Sports Canada. For the purpose of this PA, sport is defined as "Activities that develop specific skills, and that are organized around competition and governed by rules" and will contribute to the National Women's Health Research Initiative (NWHRI) which is advancing a coordinated research program that addresses under-researched and high-priority areas of women's health and will ensure new evidence improves women's and gender-diverse people's care and health outcomes. The NWHRI promotes an intersectional lens to research and care to tackle persistent gaps for all women, including for Indigenous, Black, and women impacted by racism, women with disabilities, and members of Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, and additional sexually and gender diverse (2SLGBTQI+) communities.
This PA is designed to support research that considers physical, biological, reproductive, psychological, emotional, cultural, and/or spiritual health as it relates to female athletes participating in sports across the life-course together with gender and other intersecting variables. Target research areas for this initiative include:
• Sex-related factors that differently or disproportionately influence health outcomes of female athletes participating in sports.
• Impact of sports participation on puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, postpartum health, menopause, aging, and/or other sex-specific health outcomes among female athletes.
• Identification of unique health experiences of female athletes participating in sport with intersecting variables including ethnicity, (dis)ability, age, sexual orientation, and gender (including gender identity inclusive of trans, non-binary, gender non-conforming, and other gender diverse identities; gender relations; gender roles; and/or institutionalized gender dimensions);
• Identification of strategies to manage, support, and promote mental health and psychological safety of female athletes in the context of sport participation.

The CIHR Institute of Gender and Health (CIHR-IGH) will fund applications that are relevant to its mandate and research priorities, as described in our new Research Priority Plan, and that are aligned with at least one of the following research areas.
Research Areas:
1. Advancing intersectionality in sex and gender science (2 awards)
2. Understanding sex and gender mechanisms and processes (2 awards)
3. Sex and gender science for health equity in priority communities (3 awards)

The specific objectives of this funding opportunity are:
• To provide recognition and funding to academic health research trainees;
• To provide a reliable supply of highly skilled and qualified researchers.

This Directed Grant is to provide CAHR with $14,400 in 2024/25 to support community registration scholarships at the CAHR 2025 conference. CIHR will support up to 18 scholarships for community members, with prioritization for racialized women, Indigenous People, and Black people.

The specific objectives of this funding opportunity are:
• To provide recognition and funding to academic health research trainees;
• To provide a reliable supply of highly skilled and qualified researchers.
