The project will consist of two events focused on examining how Canada could benefit from its relations with certain allies, such as the Franco-German couple, the Nordic Defence Cooperation member countries and the Baltic States.

December 2024 - As a result of the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces, Sudan is facing a complex and unprecedented humanitarian crisis. It is characterized by massive protection violations, the displacement of over 11 million people and dire levels of acute food insecurity and malnutrition in many parts of the country.

With GAC’s support, Canadian Foodgrains Bank aims to meet the immediate food needs of conflict-affected communities in Al Jazirah, North Kordofan, South Darfur and White Nile through the provision of gender-responsive humanitarian food assistance. Project activities include: (1) distributing of in-kind food and vouchers to vulnerable households; (2) forming gender-equitable community advisory committees to inform project implementation; and (3) conducting safety audits for project activities, including safety risks for women, girls and marginalized groups.

October 2024 - An estimated 1 million Rohingya fled political persecution in Myanmar, with the majority seeking refuge in overcrowded, temporary settlements in Cox’s Bazar District, Bangladesh. These refugees face numerous protection risks, including violence, exploitation, and a lack of legal rights, as they are not permitted to work in Bangladesh. As a result, they remain heavily reliant on humanitarian assistance to meet their basic needs.

With GAC’s support, Development and Peace – Caritas Canada and its local partner, Caritas Bangladesh, helps provide safe and gender-sensitive emergency shelter, sanitation, and protection services to Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar District, using a community-based approach. Project activities include: (1) rehabilitating shelters; (2) distributing emergency shelter kits; (3) rehabilitating water and sanitation facilities; and (4) providing protection services.

With GAC’s support, Development and Peace helps provide life-saving nutrition, protection, water, sanitation and hygiene services, and multi-purpose cash assistance (MPCA) to vulnerable refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs) and host communities in North Darfur, Gedaref and White Nile. Project activities include: (1) providing nutrition screening and referral services; (2) providing case management, mental health, and psychosocial support services; (3) establishing referral pathways for gender-based violence (GBV) and providing GBV referral services; (4) rehabilitating water points and expanding water systems; (5) constructing and rehabilitating gender-sensitive latrines, showers and handwashing facilities; (6) providing non-food items, including dignity and hygiene kits; and (7) disbursing MPCA to vulnerable households.

November 2024 – The 2024 Humanitarian Needs Response Plan reports that 6.5 million people across Ukraine require support within the protection cluster and its sub-clusters. The ongoing trauma, increased levels of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), and limited access to mental health services worsen the situation. The protection cluster identified psychosocial support as a key objective, with about 500,000 people across Ukraine requiring individual or group mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) services. To date, 270,000 people have been reached, showing the urgent need for more partners to address this gap. The Winter Response Plan (WRP) states that nearly 4 million internally displaced persons in Ukraine have significant humanitarian needs, including 85,000 individuals currently living in shelters.

With Global Affairs Canada’s support, ADRA provides mental health, winterization and protection assistance to affected persons with intersecting vulnerabilities in the 5 most-affected oblasts of U

November 2024 – 11.1 million people need protection-related support. These include 3.2 million children and 7.8 million people with health-related and shelter needs. The displacement and family separation increased the risk of gender-based violence (GBV), human trafficking and other conflict-related protection risks, such as torture. Also, the decline in mental health and unprocessed trauma reduced individuals’ ability to cope with daily life. This helps to increase protection risks, including GBV and child abuse, and caregivers’ capacity to provide care for children.

With Global Affairs Canada’s support, Development and Peace helps address the urgent needs of 6,250 vulnerable women, men and children impacted by the ongoing conflict in Kharkiv, Mykolaiv, and Odesa oblasts.
