Grants and Contributions

About this information

In June 2016, as part of the Open Government Action Plan, the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat (TBS) committed to increasing the transparency and usefulness of grants and contribution data and subsequently launched the Guidelines on the Reporting of Grants and Contributions Awards, effective April 1, 2018.

The rules and principles governing government grants and contributions are outlined in the Treasury Board Policy on Transfer Payments. Transfer payments are transfers of money, goods, services or assets made from an appropriation to individuals, organizations or other levels of government, without the federal government directly receiving goods or services in return, but which may require the recipient to provide a report or other information subsequent to receiving payment. These expenditures are reported in the Public Accounts of Canada. The major types of transfer payments are grants, contributions and \'other transfer payments\'.

Included in this category, but not to be reported under proactive disclosure of awards, are (1) transfers to other levels of government such as Equalization payments as well as Canada Health and Social Transfer payments. (2) Grants and contributions reallocated or otherwise redistributed by the recipient to third parties; and (3) information that would normally be withheld under the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act.

Development of a micro-extraction protocol using 3D microscopy and small-scale laboratory tests to identify greening solvents for the selective leaching of metals

Agreement Number:

1027853

Duration: from Mar 31, 2025 to Mar 31, 2027
Description:

The project aims to revolutionize the extraction of critical metals for battery materials with innovative solvent metallurgical technologies, focusing on deep eutectic solvents (DES) and the integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI-ML). It addresses the inefficiencies and environmental impacts of traditional methods, such as hydrometallurgy, by offering greening solutions for metal recovery. Activities include DES synthesis and testing, AI-ML-assisted prototype design, and autonomous laboratory process validation for efficient scale-up and industrial applicability. The results of the project are intended to strengthen Canada’s position in the global battery supply chain and its transition to a low-carbon economy by offering accelerated, efficient and greener technologies for the recovery of critical metals needed for battery materials.

A life-cycle thinking decision support tool for determining optimal building retrofit packages

Agreement Number:

1028785

Duration: from Mar 31, 2025 to Mar 31, 2029
Description:

Over 50% of Canada's residential buildings are over 30 years old, and more than 20% are over 50, leading to higher energy demands due to outdated construction standards. Retrofitting these buildings offers a pathway to improve energy efficiency and occupant well-being. However, retrofit strategies must be optimized to balance environmental, social, and economic factors to meet Canada's emissions reduction targets. Current approaches often need more comprehensive frameworks for assessing building upgrades, such as insulation and mechanical systems, through life cycle assessment (LCA) and life cycle cost (LCC) lenses. This Project aims to develop a life-cycle thinking decision-support tool for optimizing retrofit solutions for National Building Code Part 9 buildings. It will calculate carbon emissions and costs for various retrofit packages, optimize them for energy use, carbon reduction, and cost-efficiency, and evaluate climate resilience. The results will inform the development of a web-based optimization tool.
