Through this 24-month project, FOXY will scale the previous SMASH program to be more inclusive of Northern and Indigenous young men and non-binary youth with complex needs and disabilities located in the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. It will address barriers faced by youth with complex needs and disabilities by delivering modified SMASH programs to combat harmful gender norms and advance gender equality across the North, using inclusive lesson plans and implementing enhanced workshop facilitation of and on-the land Peer Leader Retreats. The project will include a Think Tank, pilot testing, evaluations, and community-based action research, engaging with Northern youth with complex needs and disabilities. FOXY will publish research and infographics to share information on the promising practice allowing others to replicate or expand upon this project.

Through this 24-month project, Andrew Fleck Children’s Services will develop and put in place promising practices related to Early Childhood Education for children living in a shelter with their mothers after fleeing domestic violence, in particular children who may have experienced abuse directly and/or witnessed abuse in their homes before seeking safety. It will address gaps in equitable early learning opportunities for children by supporting Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) as they provide trauma-informed, play-based early learning experiences.

To do so, the project will create two toolkits for early childhood educators – one on trauma-informed practices and one to support their own well-being.

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are brief, energetic flashes of radio waves emitted by unknown astrophysical objects located outside of our galaxy. The origins of these enigmatic transients remain one of the greatest mysteries in modern astrophysics. To further understand this phenomenon, AstroSat will observe a nearby repeating FRB source, located in an extragalactic globular cluster, across optical to X-ray wavelengths, utilizing AstroSat’s LAXPC, CZTI, SXT, and UVIT instruments. The team will perform simultaneous, high time resolution observations with sensitive radio telescopes, including CHIME, Effelsberg, and the GBT, to search for multiwavelength emission coinciding with FRB activity. AstroSat’s hard X-ray detectors will enable the search for X-ray emission from the FRB source with unprecedented sensitivity and perform critical tests of FRB models that will shed light on the origins of this source.

This project will be using new images from the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope on the Astrosat satellite mission to study the ultraviolet (UV) light from high mass stars in a nearby galaxy. Theories predict that this high-energy UV light is thought to heat the surrounding gas in the galaxy, but, until now, the combination of high-resolution UV maps (from Astrosat) and sensitive maps of the gas that can trace gas temperature (from a ground-based radio telescope) were not abailable simultaneously. The project will measure whether there is a signature of gas heating from high mass stars.

The proposal is for analysis of new data from the Astrosat X-ray and ultraviolet observatory on M31 and Hercules X-1. M31 (Andromeda) is the nearest large neighboring galaxy to our own Milky Way galaxy. It presents astronomers with an ideal viewpoint of a galaxy, in contrast to our galaxy which is mostly obscured by dust. The team will measure the hot stars in M31 to learn about the formation and structure of that galaxy. Hercules X-1 is a normal star in orbit with a neutron star that emits X-rays and ultraviolet light as it funnels matter from the normal star. The study will measure the matter flows from star to neutron star, and how the matter emits X-rays and ultraviolet light.

This project will collect measurements of the trace gases, aerosol particles and clouds present in the atmosphere over Eureka, Nunavut (80N, 86W) in 2025-2027 using instruments based at the Polar Environment Atmospheric Research Laboratory (PEARL).
