Acquire new clam processing optical sorters that use vision technology

This grant represents Canada's support to the Junior Professional Officer (JPO) Program of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). It is part of a larger contribution to the United Nations, which supports the filling of up to 20 positions with young Canadian professionals.

UNHCR is using these funds to recruit and appoint up to four young Canadians, allowing them to gain professional on-the-ground experience in international development and also to help the organization fulfill its mandate and achieve its Sustainable Development Goals.

UNHCR's mandate is to lead and coordinate international action to protect refugees. Its work is essential to global efforts to help refugees and find solutions for refugees and other forcibly displaced people around the world.

This project aims to strengthen climate adaptation and socio-ecological resilience for more than 5,000 people, particularly women, young people, and members of indigenous communities in the province of Padre Abad, Ucayali region, Peru. It is based on an integrated territorial approach to prevent, reduce and respond to forest fires, while promoting ecological restoration, inclusive governance and the transition to sustainable agricultural practices.
The project seeks to promote the adoption of nature-based solutions and the implementation of gender-sensitive and intercultural territorial governance mechanisms. Project activities include: (1) strengthening the capacity of local authorities, indigenous organizations and communities to plan and implement integrated forest fire management strategies, including community early warning systems; (2) promoting the adoption of regenerative and climate-smart agricultural practices, such as agroforestry systems, vegetated firebreaks and living barriers, to restore degraded ecosystems and improve sustainable productivity; (3) supporting the restoration of corridors to strengthen ecological connectivity and landscape resilience; (4) improving access for women, young people, and indigenous peoples to public and private climate finance mechanisms that are tailored to their needs and realities; and (5) strengthening the capacity of financial institutions, local governments, and land management platforms to integrate gender, climate, and biodiversity considerations into their policies, services, and investments.

Collège Nordique Francophone hosts its first Forum international sur la vitalité des langues minoritaires et autochtones dans le Nord circumpolaire from February 3 to 5, 2026, as part of the development of a thematic network focused on promoting minority and Indigenous languages. This event aims to encourage the sharing of best practices and bring together experts from northern regions to explore innovative solutions to support linguistic vitality. It is part of a process leading to the submission of a request for recognition of the network by the University of the Arctic. The primary beneficiaries are educators, researchers, and community leaders working to sustain minority or Indigenous languages, as well as students and others interested in this field.
