The Online News Act (the Act) received Royal Assent on June 22, 2023, and on December 15, 2023, the Online News Act Application and Exemption Regulations (Regulations) came into force. The Regulations provide additional direction to the CRTC about how platforms can obtain an exemption from the mandatory bargaining and final offer arbitration provisions of the Act. Google has been granted a five-year exemption from the Online News Act in recognition of its agreement to pay $100 million dollars per year (adjusted to inflation) to the Canadian Journalism Collective, which has started distributing funding to news businesses.

Although new digital organizations are emerging amidst these closures, traditional news outlets, particularly local ones, are closing at a faster rate than new ones open. The impact of a struggling news ecosystem has serious societal implications, including on national identity, social unity, and institutional trust. The Government of Canada is investing in a range of support measures for media and journalism to maintain a strong, vibrant democracy and a Canadian population resilient to misinformation.
Our official languages are a priority for the Government of Canada. They are central to Canadian identity and support the diversification of the Canadian economy.
The Government of Canada has implemented all 33 of the new or enhanced initiatives in Action Plan for Official Languages 2023–2028. When combined with the 49 ongoing initiatives from previous Action Plans, the 19 federal partners of the Action Plan for Official Languages 2023–2028 are delivering 82 initiatives in support of official languages, worth $4.1 billion over 5 years.
