Parks Canada is the only federal organization that manages and responds to wildfires on the ground, with a national cadre of fully trained and equipped wildland fire management personnel. Parks Canada takes direct action, in collaboration with communities, to prevent and reduce the risk of wildfires to communities and infrastructures.
In July 2024, a third of the town of Jasper was destroyed by wildfire. 820 units of housing were lost to the wildfire and over 600 displaced Jasper households have applied for interim housing assistance. Parks Canada and the Municipality of Jasper have worked diligently to support residents and local businesses throughout the rebuild process, in securing interim housing solutions for residents and supporting economic and social recovery for the community.
Parks Canada is actively managing the ecological impact of zebra mussels in Clear Lake in Riding Mountain National Park, while maintaining quality visitor experiences. Engagement with community members and stakeholders remains a priority as planning continues, particularly regarding motorized watercraft use.
