The Government acknowledges that there are no Indigenous Languages that are considered to be safe in Canada, and three-quarters of Indigenous languages in Canada are endangered. The Government has committed to ensuring that the Indigenous Languages Act is fully implemented in order to preserve, promote, and revitalize Indigenous languages in Canada and committed to move forward with long term, predictable, and sufficient funding to support the full Implementation of the Act.

Various Indigenous organizations have expressed concerns about the adequacy of legal protections afforded to Indigenous knowledge and cultural expressions. The protection of Indigenous knowledge and cultural expressions was raised as part of the recent Parliamentary Review of the Copyright Act and is an element of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People, which the Government of Canada has committed to implementing.

The Canadian sport system has been under the spotlight to address this public health issue. More recently, the Standing Committee on Health’s (HESA) 24th Report on the Subcommittee on Sports-Related Concussions in Canada’s study, entitled “Tackling the Problem Head-on: Sports-Related Concussions in Canada” was tabled on June 3, 2019 in the House of Commons. The report contains 13 recommendations to support ongoing actions by the Federal government in this area.
