Strengthening School Canteens in Burkina Faso

The ‘Strengthening school canteens in Burkina Faso’ project seeks to improve children’s nutrition, particularly for girls in schools in the north of the country. The project would provide breakfast and lunch to children in 450 schools per year, with half of them targeting schools with displaced children. To increase local production capacities and individual skills, the project will provide financial and technical support to local producers, with a focus on women. Training provided will include climate-smart agricultural methods such as those that promote better usage of water and forest resources. In some communities, the project would use an innovative approach by providing meals based from the supported producers. Finally, the project would provide equipment and training to school employees to improve the performance and sustainability of school canteens. The project would reach 114,600 direct beneficiaries, (47,500 girls and 47,500 boys) as well as 19,600 local producers, community members and school workers, of which 10,192 are women.

The expected results are: (1) Improved ability of small agricultural producers, animal breeders and processors, especially women, in supplying school canteens with local food products; (2) Improved nutritional status of students, particularly girls, through a local production and purchase-based school canteen program.
