How is Canada improving our defence relationship with China while simultaneously holding them to account?
Suggested Response:
- Open lines of communication between countries, particularly between defence establishments, are essential.
- To this end, on the margins of an international meeting in Singapore, I had the opportunity to meet with my Chinese counterpart.
- During our meeting, I reiterated the importance of responsible state behaviour in accordance with international law.
- I further highlighted Canada’s growing concern about recent Chinese military exercises around Taiwan, as well as China’s ongoing and growing economic and financial support to Russia.
- Looking ahead, it will be important to maintain open lines of communication and I welcome future opportunities for continued dialogue.
