Issue/Question:
The Canadian Minerals and Metals Plan (CMMP) is a pan-Canadian vision for the future of the minerals and metals sector to help position Canada as the leading mining nation and lay the foundation for lasting success at home and abroad.
Suggested Response:
• Canada is a global mining power, but we must act now to secure our leadership position.
• This is a generational opportunity to supply the world with safe, secure and sustainable commodities, products, services and innovations.
• The federal-provincial/territorial Canadian Minerals and Metals Plan (CMMP) is an ambitious framework to boost Canadian competitiveness in a low-carbon economy.
• A CMMP Action Plan was released in March 2020, to build on our strengths and realize global opportunities for Canadian firms.
• Action Plan 2020 introduces six pan-Canadian initiatives to boost competitiveness—one under each of the strategic directions from the CMMP:
o Economic development and competitiveness;
o Advancing the participation of Indigenous peoples;
o The environment;
o Science, technology and innovation;
o Communities; and
o Global leadership.
• In response to the impacts of the COVID-19 crisis, Canada’s mines ministers and industry confirmed that the CMMP is the best vehicle for collaborating and driving recovery.
• Future action plans will continue to support an innovative, low footprint, highly competitive sector that is central to Canada’s socio-economic success.
