Issue/Question:

The Canada Council for the Arts refused a funding request from Théâtre du Rideau vert.

Suggested Response:

• The Canada Council for the Arts is an arm’s length Crown Corporation. It is responsible for determining its programs and activities independently.

• Canada Council grants are allocated primarily through peer evaluation committees, which are composed of artists, administrators and other arts professionals from all parts of Canada.

• The Government of Canada was pleased to provide an additional $55 million to the Canada Council for the Arts to eligible arts organizations that are experiencing a significant financial impact due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background:

• The Canada Council for the Arts (CCA) is a Crown corporation that provides a broad range of grants and services to professional Canadian artists and arts organizations.
• It does so in the area of music, writing and publishing, visual arts, dance, media arts and integrated arts.
• The CCA invests in Canada’s cultural industries through a broad range of grants, services and payments to professional Canadian artists and arts organizations. The CCA also awards prizes and fellowships to artists and scholars for their contributions to the arts, humanities and sciences in Canada.
• Following a Budget 2016 announcement to double the CCA’s annual parliamentary appropriations to approximately $360 million by 2020–21, the CCA launched a new simplified funding program model that aims to:
o Support artists, artistic groups and organizations committed to the creation and dissemination of innovative, vibrant and diverse arts;
o Foster a vibrant foundation for the arts in Canada by supporting arts organizations at the heart of Canada’s creative communities;
o Support Indigenous individuals, groups, Indigenous-led arts organizations and arts/cultural sector development organizations;
o Support innovation, collaboration, sustainability and adaptability in Canada’s professional arts sector;
o Encourage the dissemination of art across the country; and
o Support the presentation and circulation of Canadian art and artists abroad.
• Grants are allocated primarily through peer evaluation committees, composed of artists, administrators and other arts professionals from all parts of Canada.
