The objective of the requirement is to provide the Public Health Agency of Canada with laboratory-based services for neuropathologic examination and brain tissue banking to support diagnosis, national surveillance and research for Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and related brain diseases in Canada. Specific activities include: performing cranial autopsies of suspected Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease patients; collecting frozen and chemically preserved brain tissue specimens; receiving, storing and cataloguing brain tissue specimens from external laboratories; conducting detailed postmortem examination of brain tissues; preparing diagnostic neuropathology reports authorized by a neuropathologist; and maintaining a bank of donated brain tissue specimens for research purposes.
