Radon (Rn) is a naturally occurring, colourless and odourless gas that is radioactive and known to cause lung cancer. In fact, Rn is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking and the leading cause of the disease among nonsmokers (World Health Organization, 2009). Radon is generated naturally from the radioactive decay of uranium. Both elements are found in varying amounts in all the soils and rocks throughout the province (Goodwin et al., 2009, 2010a).
This dataset is associated with the article authored by Christine Martineau, Julien Beguin, Armand Séguin and David Paré " Cumulative effects of disturbances on soil nutrients: predominance of antagonistic short-term responses to the salvage logging of insect-killed stands". It comprises 24 plots (experimental units) located both in Montmorency Forest and in the Parc national de la Jacques-Cartier (47°19' N, 71°09' W). The study contained four different levels of disturbance treatment (defoliated, logged, defoliated and logged, and undisturbed controls). Each level of treatment was replicated six times.

Parameters include total mercury, methylmercury, pH, alkalinity, specific conductance, colour, chlorophyll, nutrients, ions, dissolved inorganic and organic carbon, and total metals. In most years surface samples were collected from three locations on each lake, following nationally standardized protocols. Sampling occurred from 2008 to 2016, with six core lakes sampled throughout the eight-year period.
