Archived population trend estimates, based on data collected through the North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS), for approximately 300 Canadian bird species. These archived estimates use data from Canadian BBS routes only, collected from 1970 through 2011. Trends are presented for species, provinces, territories, Bird Conservation Regions (BCR), as well as the sub-regions that make up the analytical strata (intersections of BCRs and provinces/territories), for which there are sufficient BBS data for statistical analysis. These estimates were produced using a hierarchical Bayesian model, which differs from the maximum likelihood model that was used to generate BBS trend estimates from 2002 through 2009.

These themes present the compilation of protected areas in Quebec. They also include important territories. Protected areas include a variety of different legal or administrative designations. Territories registered in the Register of Protected Areas must meet the definition of protected area in the Natural Heritage Conservation Act (LCPN; CQLR, chapter C-61.01) or that of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The definition of the LCPN is “A protected area is a territory, in a terrestrial or aquatic environment, geographically delimited, whose legal framework and administration are aimed specifically at ensuring the protection and maintenance of biological diversity and associated natural and cultural resources.” While IUCN defines it as “a clearly defined geographical space, recognized, dedicated and managed, by any effective means, legal or otherwise, in order to ensure the long-term conservation of nature and the ecosystem services and cultural values associated with it”. A territory of conservation importance is a geographically delimited territory for which the Ministry of the Environment and the Fight Against Climate Change (MELCC) or a body of the Government of Quebec has expressed its intention to prioritize its allocation for the purposes of protected areas.**This third party metadata element was translated using an automated translation tool (Amazon Translate).**
