Contained within the Atlas of Canada's Reference Map Series, 1961 to 2010, is a revised bilingual map which was produced as a special product for the International Polar Year. It was produced from the Atlas of Canada Reference Map, MCR0001, North Circumpolar Region (2008). Its round shape shows detail from north of 55 degrees latitude. The map uses the Azimuthal Equidistant projection.

This historical map series consists of the Planimetric Series printed monochrome maps named using the National Topographic System (NTS) map sheet identifier within Alberta. The Planimetric Series base maps were initiated in 1949 and derived from aerial photographs taken during the years 1949 to 1952. These maps display: Alberta Township System (ATS) - hydrographic features - provincial highways - roads - pipelines - transmission lines - municipalities. These maps are not available as GIS-ready data.

Hydrological patterns determine water depth, flow intensity, duration, and frequency of flooding, as well as low flow periods. Water levels in streams are not considered stable, but fluctuate seasonally. Hydrologic conditions primarily affect abiotic factors such as habitat structure, temperature and water chemistry, which in turn determine the biotic components (species composition, species richness, primary productivity) of the stream ecosystem. In PEI National Park, stream discharge (m3/sec) is predicted in four streams within PEI National Park using Onset HOBO U20 water level loggers and rating curves generated in four small 1 – 3rd order streams.

Atmospheric Contaminant Deposition using Snowpack

The data set includes snow samples (metals, water chemistry and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons [PAHs]). Data from 2012-2014 snowpack samples collected from ~90-130 sites located varying distances from the major oil sands development area show deposition patterns and levels consistent with earlier studies carried out in 2008 (Kelly et al. PNAS, 2009 and 2010). As with earlier findings, concentrations of numerous metals, water chemistry parameters (Ni, Pb, Zn, V, La, Al, Fe, total Hg, methyl Hg, total suspended solids [TSS], particulate organic carbon [POC], particulate organic nitrogen [PON], total phosphorus [TP]) and PAHs decrease with distance from the major mining extraction and upgrading facilities.
