Contained within the 3rd Edition (1957) of the Atlas of Canada is a plate that shows maps of earthquakes, magnetism and tides across Canada. The two larger upper maps on this plate show geomagnetism. Since the North Magnetic Pole is in a different position from the Geographical North Pole, and the lines of the earths magnetic forces are deflected by various agencies, the compass needle does not point toward the Geographical North Pole in most locations. The deflection of the compass needle from True North is called magnetic variation or declination.

Whitebark pine is considered a “keystone species” in the mountain national parks, as it plays several important ecological roles where it exists in subalpine environments. Its survival has been threatened by the combined effects of fire suppression, climate change, mountain pine beetle outbreaks and a disease known as white pine blister rust. The 100-tree stand assessment protocol is a standard means of assessing blister rust infection rates in stands. This information is important because healthy trees in highly infected stands potentially have a higher likelihood of resistance.
This map shows the change in old-age dependency ratios from 1991 to 2000. The data was computed for each census division by dividing the 2000 dependency-ratio value by the value for 1991. Census divisions where the dependency ratio is unchanged or has increased during this time period have a value of 1.00 or greater. The old-age dependency ratio for Canada increased from 16.9 to 18.3.
