Since 1988, the governments of Canada and Quebec have been working together to conserve, restore, protect and develop the St. Lawrence River under the St. Lawrence Action Plan (SLAP). One of the projects identified under the theme of biodiversity conservation is the development of an integrated plan for the conservation of the natural environments and biodiversity of the St. Lawrence River. The identification of priority sites for conservation has been the first step of this planning exercise. Conservation planning of natural environments requires a reliable, accurate and up-to-date image of the spatial distribution of ecosystems in the study area.

This dataset contains lake-wide algal bloom indices (extent, intensity, and severity) of Lake Winnipeg on a daily basis over the June through October monitoring season. These data are derived from satellite remote sensing algorithms using European Space Agency's (ESA's) MEdium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) sensor on the Envisat satellite (2002-2012) and ESA's Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI) sensor on the Sentinel 3A and Sentinel 3B satellites (2016-present). Birds adapted to alpine ecosystems are often sensitive to habitat and climate changes because of their niche specialization. For example, birds that are specialized to breeding in colder alpine conditions may be outcompeted by more generalist species if warmer conditions arise. Yearly data are collected at these sites using audio recorders to determine indices of bird diversity and occupancy trends to inform management.
