Data collected can provide a number of ecological indices; for example, used to assess the effects of land use and climate change. Yearly data are collected at these sites using audio recorders to determine indices of bird diversity and occupancy trends to inform management.

Fire plays an important role in maintaining health of forests and grasslands, and maintains biodiversity by creating a mosaic of varying age structure. The fescue grasslands of the Foothills Parkland Ecoregion were historically maintained by fire, both from natural causes and by First Nations. More than a century of fire suppression has contributed to loss of open grasslands due to shrub and aspen encroachment. The Area Burned Condition Class (ABCC) measure is designed to be evaluated and reported as a condition monitoring measure within the Parks Canada Agency National Ecological Integrity (EI) Monitoring program in all national parks with fire-dependent vegetation.

Elk are by far the dominant ungulate in
Waterton Lakes Naitonal Park, with a
population large enough to influence
park ecosystems, particularly in the
montane and aspen parkland ecoregions. As important grazers, they help to
maintain grassland health by preventing
woody plant encroachment, but overgrazing
will cause grassland health to
deteriorate. In Waterton Lakes National
Park, aerial elk surveys (Figure 1) have
been conducted since the early 1970s. The winter elk population census is conducted by means of an aerial or ground survey, in which a complete minimum population count is calculated, with the goal of detecting change over time.

Avian point counts are conducted annually by collecting and transcribing acoustic recordings. Recording stations are located along 11 transects, and are visited on mornings between late May and early July. Songs and calls for all identifiable species are documented. Migratory songbirds are an excellent indicator of forest ecosystem health because they are sensitive to environmental change, are widespread, and are easily surveyed.

The Grasslands National Park monitors the area of occurrence of the Black-Tailed Prairie Dog through measuring surface area in hectares of active colonies. Monitoring provides data on the expansion or contraction of black-tailed prairie dog colonies in the park. Active colony areas outside of the park and in the greater park ecosystem (southwest Saskatchewan) are also monitored, but this data is not included.
