Spanish Harbour was identified as an Area of Concern (AOC) due to degraded water quality and environmental health and was recognized as an Area in Recovery in 1999. As part of the Great Lakes Action Plan, assessments of benthic conditions in Spanish Harbour have been conducted periodically since 2003. Using information from three assessment components – sediment chemistry, sediment toxicity, and benthic community structure – overall and assessment component-specific conditions were determined based on the Canada-Ontario Decision Making Framework for the Assessment of Contaminated Sediments in the Great Lakes. Results from these assessments are used by ECCC and MECP AOC risk managers to evaluate sediment management plans.

Sediment profile imagery (SPI) (also known as REMOTS (Rhoads and Germano, 1982)) facilitates the assessment of the biophysical processes that occur in the benthic environment through the acquisition and analysis of high resolution images of vertical sections and surfaces of the seafloor. The SPI apparatus incorporates the use of a 12-megapixel Digital SLR camera to obtain in situ photographs of the first 20 cm of the seafloor. Because the sediment is not disturbed in the process, SPI photographs provide information on the physical and biological components of the seabed that is not readily available using traditional methods. From 2012 to 2019, 17 SPI datasets were acquired at 13 disposal at sea sites in British Columbia to monitor the environmental conditions of the sea floor.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada requires operators of active marine finfish aquaculture sites in British Columbia to monitor for benthic (seabed) impacts. The benthic monitoring program is designed to limit the location, area, and intensity of impact created by fish farms to the seabed and to support sustainable aquaculture by maintaining healthy ecosystems. In addition to the monitoring and reporting required of licence holders, DFO staff biologists conduct field audits to collect and assess sediment samples and take video of the seafloor. This information is used to determine compliance and learn more about benthic impacts during different times of the production cycle.

Mainstem Athabasca River Biomonitoring

Benthic macroinvertebrates, comprising insects, crusteaceans, molluscs and worms, represent a group of organisms used widely in environmental monitoring programs as early warning indicators to assess the effects of change in water quality or physical habitat conditions on aquatic ecosystem health. An interpretive report (Culp et. al., 2018) was released in 2018 which included assessments of the benthic and supporting data from 2012-2015. Water quality and ecosystem health surveillance and monitoring data collected to complete assessments of beneficial use impairments of Areas of Concern (AOCs) and to track the effectiveness of remedial measures and confirm restoration of beneficial uses are included in this dataset. AOCs are geographic areas in the Great Lakes that were identified in the mid-1980s where significant impairment of beneficial uses has occurred as a result of human activities at the local level. Remediating AOCs contributes to the sustainability of local communities and of the Great Lakes region, and is a joint commitment under the Canada-United States Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement (GLWQA).

Contained within the 3rd Edition (1957) of the Atlas of Canada is a plate that shows the coverage of hydrographic charts produced by the Surveys and Mapping Branch of the Department of Mines and Technical Surveys, circa 1958. It also shows portions of three published sheets which illustrate the kinds of hydrographic charts available. The section entitled Inland Waters is part of Coast Chart 2303, Inland Waters, Great Lakes, Jackfish Bay to St. Ignace Island, Lake Superior. The Harbour Chart is part of Harbour Chart 3418, Vancouver Harbour.
