​The main objective of this survey was to obtain additional information regarding the presence and levels of undeclared milk in milk alternative products. Of the 252 samples tested, 6 were found to contain undeclared beta-lactoglobulin (BLG) and/or casein. A single sample of dairy-free chocolate and 2 dairy-free ice cream samples containing both BLG and casein were deemed to represent a health risk and were recalled.

The main objective of this survey was to obtain baseline information regarding the presence and levels of undeclared allergens and gluten in frozen desserts. 598 samples were tested in this survey, and 10 of the samples were found to contain undeclared allergens including the milk protein beta-lactoglobulin (BLG) and casein, as well as gluten, soy and almond. Most positive results indicated the presence of milk allergens in non-dairy frozen desserts. 1 non-dairy frozen dessert containing undeclared milk and 1 dairy frozen dessert containing undeclared almond were deemed to represent a health risk and were recalled.

Dairy farming is one of Canada’s most important agricultural activities, ranking first in total farm sales in Quebec, Ontario, and Nova Scotia in 1997. Most of the dairy farms in Canada are in Quebec (37%) and Ontario (33%). In 1996 there were 30 900 farms reporting over 1.2 million dairy cows, a dramatic drop since 1971, when approximately 145 000 farms reported 2.3 million dairy cows.
