Ontario's Crown forest is divided into geographic planning areas, known as forest management units. Most of these units are managed by individual forest companies under a Sustainable Forest License. A forest management unit is identified by an assigned official name (e.g., Black Spruce Forest) and a unique numeric code. Before any forestry activities can take place in a management unit, there must be an approved forest management plan in place for each management unit.

Site Regions and Site Districts of Ontario represent an early Ecological Land Classification (ELC) system originally developed by Angus Hills. This dataset was revised by the ELC Working Group in 2000 to better reflect new information and new technology. The Site Regions of Ontario was used for descriptive, planning, and resource management purposes. This upper level in its hierarchy was most useful for provincial and regional roll-ups of data and for strategic planning.

Get data on areas where outdoor fires are not permitted. This dataset shows areas where outdoor fires are restricted in accordance with the Forest Fires Prevention Act. There are two reasons why a restricted fire zone is in effect: * outdoor conditions are extremely dry * the number of fires occurring has stretched firefighting resources to capacity A restricted fire zone is a temporary measure for extreme situations and is lifted as soon as conditions permit. The Forest Fire Info Map shows active fires, current fire danger and restricted fire zones in place due to high fire danger.

Data show where pathogens - fungal, bacillial or viral - have caused damage by reducing growth rates, tree vigor or have killed trees. Examples of forest diseases include White Pine Blister Rust, Armillaria Root Rot etc. The Government of Ontario tracks forest damage events to help proactively manage the detrimental effects to our forests. We monitor the threat and spread of invasive forest pest insect species in Ontario.

Bait resources in most of the province are assigned to harvesters through the use of a block system -- 1 harvester per 'bait harvest' area. There are exceptions to the block system (e.g., Lake Erie), where bait is allocated to multiple users fishing the same area.
