The 2020 to 2023 Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy (DSDS) for Public Services and Procurement Canada provides information on commitments and performance expectations made in response to the most recent Federal Sustainable Development Strategy (FSDS).
This report supports the Government of Canada's commitment included in the Federal Sustainable Development Act (FSDA) to make sustainable development decision-making more transparent and accountable to Parliament. It also contributes to an integrated, whole‑of‑government view of activities supporting environmental sustainability.
The 2019 to 2022 Federal Sustainable Development Strategy (FSDS) presents the Government of Canada’s sustainable development goals and targets, as required by the Federal Sustainable Development Act. In keeping with the purpose of this Act to provide the legal framework for developing and implementing a Federal Sustainable Development Strategy that will make environmental decision-making more transparent and accountable to Parliament, the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) supports the goals laid out in the FSDS through the activities described in this Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy (DSDS).

The modern concept of sustainable development is derived mostly from the 1987 Brundtland Report, which defines Sustainable Development as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. Sustainable Development is a key priority for the Government of Canada, which can only be achieved with robust engagement at all stages of policy and practice and at all levels of government – federal, provincial/territorial and municipal. The Federal Sustainable Development Strategy (FSDS) identifies the Government of Canada’s sustainable development planning and reporting commitments.
