The beaver (Castor canadensis) is a large, primarily nocturnal semi-aquatic rodent used as an indicator of the conditions in freshwater ecosystems due to its role as a keystone species and an ecosystem engineer. The potential for beaver colonization within Kouchibouguac National Park is considerable due to the quantity of first and second order streams within its borders. In addition, the most important and preferred food source available to beavers in the Park is the trembling aspen (Populous tremuloides); though this tree species colonizes disturbed areas and is usually replaced by conifers or shade-tolerant hardwoods in long-term succession. Hence, the population dynamics of beavers can reflect large-scale changes in forest ecosystems.

The influence of water temperature on the ecology of aquatic organisms with optimal thermal ranges is quite substantial, as these regimes regulate activity, growth, survival, and spawning behaviour. In consequence, a deviation from normal temperature ranges often cause displacement, disease, or even mortality therefore water temperature constitutes an important limiting factor for the condition of fish habitat and freshwater ecosystems. The purpose of the fish thermal stress monitoring program at Kouchibouguac National Park is to determine the number of consecutive “hot” days within a particular time period and detect changes in the level of thermal stress imposed on fish due to warm temperatures. Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) was selected as a focus species due to its lowest thermal tolerance compared to several other fish groups.

The Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) has designed a Water Quality Index (WQI) to translate complex water quality data into an overall integrated score from 0-100. This score is based on the number of measured variables, which have observations exceeding water quality thresholds (i.e., scope); the number of these exceedances in the dataset (i.e., frequency); and the magnitude by which the observations exceed the guidelines (i.e., amplitude). These water quality parameters are crucial indicators of the physical, chemical or biological conditions in aquatic systems and processes. The purpose of the water quality monitoring program at Kouchibouguac National Park is to use this index to calculate a score and evaluate the status of our freshwater ecosystems.

The second largest concentration of common terns (Sterna hirundo) in North America is found on Tern Islands, a set of three small barrier islands separated by water at high tide located within Kouchibouguac National Park. These seabirds are indicators for the condition of coastal, marine, as well as estuarine ecosystems due to the use of these nesting and/or breeding grounds, and their reliance on the distribution of small fish populations in lagoons or along the outer beaches of barrier islands throughout the breeding season. The purpose of the common tern colony monitoring program is to determine the annual total number of nests and estimate mean clutch size in order to evaluate long-term breeding population health. The methods for this measure involve an annual systematic census on Tern Islands over a 1-2 day period in mid-to late June during the late incubation stage.

This dataset concerns monitoring of the Penouille eelgrass beds. Because of the ecological importance not only of eelgrass beds, but also of the animal communities they support, eelgrass beds are often used as indicators of coastal ecosystem health. Two sets of data deal more specifically with animal species, mainly fish, which use this habitat for different stages of their life cycle. They contain data related to each of the three sites sampled in the spring and fall using fyke nets since 2013.

The piping plover (Charadrius melodus) is a small endangered shorebird listed under the federal Species at Risk Act (SARA). This species uses ocean shorelines as breeding grounds and nests in soft sandy areas with sparse vegetation above the high tide water line. These birds are indicators for the condition of coastal ecosystems due to their critical status; but also since this species is susceptible to human disturbance, habitat loss or alterations, predation, and sensitive to inclement weather related to sea level rise or climate change. The extensive barrier islands within Kouchibouguac National Park host a considerable percentage of the population along the Atlantic Coast therefore our role is crucial in the outcome of this species on a continental scale.

Each summer, environmental community groups collect important data to determine if groupings of fish, shrimp and crab – what is called a community- can be used as an indicator of the health status of bays and estuaries. Sampling was conducted from May through September for the first years then from June through August. In 2018 and 2019, the sampling was conducted just once in each estuary. Community group members and staff sample six stations once a month in their designated estuary.

River otters (Lontra canadensis) are semi-aquatic mammalian predators closely associated to freshwater resources but also linked to terrestrial habitat features, at the aquatic-terrestrial interface of riparian zones. This species is an indicator of freshwater ecosystem conditions as healthy tributaries should be able to sustain populations of this resident top-level predator with two main ecological requirements: the availability of food and shelter opportunities. The purpose of the river otter monitoring program at Kouchibouguac National Park is to determine the total number of distinct groups as an indication of population status. The sampling methods for this measure involve an annual census in winter, usually between the end of January to early March, where transects are conducted on the entire lengths of the main watercourses from the estuaries to the Park’s border.

This program is used to determine juvenile salmonid population status and trends for Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. Surveys occur annually during the first two weeks of August and are focused on Coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) and Cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii). Data are derived from in-stream salmon fry sampling by use of minnow trap at select streams in the Long Beach and West Coast Trail units of the Park with historical runs of salmon. Salmonid fishes act as an ecological process vector, connecting and transporting energy and nutrients between the freshwater environments, coastal forests and marine ecosystems.

The assessment of the status of eelgrass (Zostera marina) beds at the bay-scale in turbid, shallow estuaries is problematic. The bay-scale assessment (i.e., tens of km) of eelgrass beds usually involves remote sensing methods such as aerial photography or satellite imagery. These methods can fail if the water column is turbid, as is the case for many shallow estuaries on Canada’s eastern seaboard. A novel towfish package was developed for the bay-scale assessment of eelgrass beds irrespective of water column turbidity.
