This database contains the data set described in Andrieux B. et al. (in preparation) about soil organic carbon bioreactivity in Quebec's spruce feathermoss forests. The soil carbon bioreactivity has been evaluated with long-term lab incubations. Carbon density in different soil functional reservoirs is available at the plot scale (n = 72): total C stock in the O layer (FH horizon), total C stock in the mineral soil (0 to 35 cm), total bioreactive C stock, total acid-insoluble C stock.

This map displays the distribution of organic soils in the agricultural region of Alberta. Organic soils consist of layers of material with greater than 30 percent organic matter and a total thickness of greater than 40 cm. Organic soils are generally saturated with water for most of the year unless drained. Saturation inhibits decomposition and encourages continued accumulation of organic material.

This data series represents the volumetric soil moisture (percent saturated soil) for the surface layer (<5 cm). The data is created daily and is averaged for the ISO standard week and month. The data is produced from passive microwave satellite data collected by the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite and converted to soil moisture using version 6.20 of the SMOS soil moisture processor. The data are produced by the European Space Agency and obtained under a Category 1 proposal for Level 2 soil moisture data.

A series of surface climate parameters have been measured by members of the Climate Processes Section at the Borden Forest Research Station (44°19’N, 79°56’W) beginning in January 2006. The initial data included precipitation. In 2007, carbon dioxide fluxes from the soil (soil respiration) began to be measured using an automated chamber system. This data series contains separate annual files for precipitation and soil carbon fluxes, each of which contain separate metadata documentation files.

This dataset is associated with the article authored by Marine Pacé, Benjamin Gadet, Julien Beguin, Yves Bergeron et David Paré entitled " Drivers of boreal tree growth and stand opening in boreal forest: the case of jack pine on sandy soils ". It comprises 37 plots including 20 plots near the locality of La Sarre (48° 48’ N; 79° 12’ W) and 17 plots near the locality of Chibougamau (49° 53’ N; 74° 20’ W). It includes data on forest stands (DBH, height, age), permanent environmental conditions (surface deposits, slope, granulometry and chemical characteristics of the C horizon), and non permanent environmental characteristics (disturbance history, understory vegetation, depth of the organic layer, soil water content chemical characteristics of the eluted and accumulation horizons). It also contains data on tree growth (dendrochronological stem analysis) and isotopic composition of the cellulose (13C).

Soil and air temperature control the composition and productivity of tundra plant communities and different species of Arctic and alpine plants respond differently to changing soil and air temperatures, which can lead to changes in community composition The Torngat National Park monitors soil and air temperature using temperature loggers deploys at several locations in the park. Air temperatures (degrees Celsius) are measured each hour using Onset ProV2 data loggers housed in a radiation shield anchored to a firm metal post 1.5 m above ground level. Soil temperature readings (degrees Celsius) have been collected using Onset Hobo Pendant or Hobo Tidbit data loggers buried at a depth of 10 cm and set to record temperatures every hour.
