CIRNAC’s 2021 Annual report reviews the institution’s steps taken in the year to further Reconciliation and Indigenous self-determination. Due to submission deadlines, the 2021 report does not include data relating to the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ People National Action Plan.
This final report follows a series of consultations that focused on two key Indigenous Languages Act implementation issues: the establishment of an Office of the Commissioner of Indigenous Languages, and the establishment of measures to facilitate the provision of adequate, sustainable and long-term funding. The report contains a comprehensive overview of what was heard throughout the virtual consultations undertaken in the Fall 2020 and the online portal and offers a series of next steps.
The Indian Act Amendment and Replacement Act requires the Minister of Indigenous Services to report annually, within the first 10 sitting days of the House of Commons in every calendar year, on the work undertaken in collaboration with First Nations and other interested parties to develop new legislation to replace the Indian Act.
