There is an unprecedented demand and urgent need for access to drugs during the COVID-19 pandemic. On March 30, 2020, the Minister of Health signed the Interim Order Respecting Drugs, Medical Devices and Foods for a Special Dietary Purpose in relation to COVID-19. The interim order (IO) allows certain drugs that may not fully meet regulatory requirements to be imported and sold in Canada.
Medical devices that are eligible for importation and sale under the interim order (IO) are known as “designated” devices. They are included in the list of medical devices for exceptional importation and sale.
The COVID-19 pandemic has created an urgent need for drugs, biocides, medical devices and foods for a special dietary purpose, and affected their supply in Canada. To help prevent or alleviate shortages of these products, the Minister of Health has signed an interim order (IO).
The tables below list the COVID-19-related clinical trials which have been authorized by Health Canada through the Food and Drug Regulations or the Interim order No. 2 for clinical trials for medical devices and drugs related to COVID-19.
The list below includes all applications received by Health Canada for drugs and vaccines used for the COVID-19 pandemic. This list includes applications received under the interim order and those received under the Food and Drug Regulations. The current status of each application is also noted.
