Land cover information is necessary for a large range of environmental applications related to climate impacts and adaption, emergency response, wildlife habitat, etc. In Canada, a 2008 user survey indicated that the most practical land cover data is provided in a nationwide 30 m spatial resolution format, with an update frequency of five years. In response to this need, the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) has generated a 30 m land cover map of Canada for the base year 2010, as well as this 2015 land cover map. This land cover dataset is also the Canadian contribution to the 30 m spatial resolution 2015 Land Cover Map of North America, which is produced by Mexican, American and Canadian government institutions under a collaboration called the North American Land Change Monitoring System (NALCMS).

Canada Harmonized Agriculture Forest Land Cover 2015 The harmonized land cover (HLC) map is produced from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) and Canadian Forest Service (CFS) data. The HLC product is exhaustive of all area from the northern edge of Canada’s forested ecosystems to the southern border. The land cover is following Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) categories, represents the year 2015, and is at 30-m spatial resolution. This harmonized land cover map combines two sector-driven land cover products: the Virtual Land Cover Engine or VLCE from the CFS (Hermosilla et al., 2018), and AAFC's Annual Crop Inventory or ACI (Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, 2018).

The land cover classes consist of vegetation types (such as forest, wetlands and agricultural crops or pasture) and categories of non-vegetated surface (such as water bodies, bedrock outcrops or settlements). These classes reflect the nature of the land surface rather than actual or potential land use. The 2000 Edition of the Ontario Land Cover Data Base is the Second Edition of this provincial land cover classification. The coverage is derived wholly from Landsat-7 Thematic Mapper (TM) satellite data frames recorded between 1999 and 2002, most from 2000 onward.

The “Land Cover for Agricultural Regions of Canada, circa 2000” is a thematic land cover classification representative of Circa 2000 conditions for agricultural regions of Canada. Land cover is derived from Landsat5-TM and/or 7-ETM+ multi-spectral imagery by inputting imagery and ground reference training data into a Decision-Tree or Supervised image classification process. Object segmentation, pixel filtering, and/or post editing is applied as part of the image classification. Mapping is corrected to the GeoBase Data Alignment Layer.

Part of the Nova Scotia Topographic Database (NSTDB), the land cover theme layer is updated and maintained from aerial photography. Land cover is limited to treed areas over 3600m2 in size and over two metres in height. Orchards, nurseries, tree lines, and single landmark trees are also included. Land Cover feature codes and their descriptions are provided with the download in a NSTDB feature code table.

This data was produced in 1999 by rationalizing a 48-class database into 28 distinct classes. The original database was derived from digital, multispectral Landsat Thematic Mapper data recorded between 1986 and 1997, with most of the satellite data frames recorded in the early 1990s. The resulting database includes: * vegetation types such as forests, wetlands and pasture * categories of non-vegetated surface such as waterbodies, bedrock or settlements The data reflects the nature of the land surface rather than the land use.

This dataset combines: * Far North Land Cover * Southern Ontario Land Resource Information System * Provincial Land Cover 2000 Edition While each of these source products has different pixel resolutions, projections and classifications, the combined OLCC data set is a standardized product. It has a: * 15 meter pixel resolution * Ontario Lambert Conformal Conic coordinate system * 30 land cover class structure The standardized classification has been accomplished at the expense of the more detailed class structures contained in the original 3 products. Where possible, the original land cover products should be used for analysis.

The National Ecological Framework for Canada's "Land Cover by Ecodistrict” dataset provides land cover information within the ecodistrict framework polygon. It provides landcover codes and their English and French language description as well as information about the percentage of the polygon that the component occupies.
