Many geometrical schemes - or map projections - are used to represent the curved surface of the Earth on map sheets. Canada uses the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) system. It is called transverse because the strips run north-south rather than east-west along the equator. This data class shows a 100 km x 100 km grid coordinate system based on the UTM projection using the North American Datum 83 (NAD83). It includes: * Military Grid Reference * Atlas identifier Instructions for downloading this dataset: * select the link below and scroll down the metadata record page until you find Transfer Options in the Distribution Information section * select the link beside the Data for download label * you must provide your name, organization and email address in order to access the dataset.

It is called transverse because the strips run north-south rather than east-west along the equator. This data class shows a 5 km x 5 km grid coordinate system based on the UTM projection using the North American Datum 83 (NAD83).

Land cover information is necessary for a large range of environmental applications related to climate impacts and adaption, emergency response, wildlife habitat, etc. In Canada, a 2008 user survey indicated that the most practical land cover data is provided in a nationwide 30 m spatial resolution format, with an update frequency of five years. In response to this need, the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) has generated a 30 m land cover map of Canada for the base year 2010, as the first of a planned series of maps to be updated every five years, or more frequently. This land cover dataset is also the Canadian contribution to the 30 m spatial resolution 2010 Land Cover Map of North America, which is produced by Mexican, American and Canadian government institutions under a collaboration called the North American Land Change Monitoring System (NALCMS).

This data was produced in 1999 by rationalizing a 48-class database into 28 distinct classes. The original database was derived from digital, multispectral Landsat Thematic Mapper data recorded between 1986 and 1997, with most of the satellite data frames recorded in the early 1990s. The resulting database includes: * vegetation types such as forests, wetlands and pasture * categories of non-vegetated surface such as waterbodies, bedrock or settlements The data reflects the nature of the land surface rather than the land use.

Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) and Enhanced Thematic Mapper (ETM+) sensors were used to generate the circa 2010 Mosaic of Canada at 30 m spatial resolution. All scenes were processed to Standard Terrain Correction Level 1T by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Further processing performed by the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing included conversion of sensor measurements to top of atmosphere reflectance, cloud and cloud shadow detection, re-projection, selection of best measurements, mosaic generation ,noise removal and quality control. To provide a clear sky measurement for each location in Canada, data from the years 2009, 2010, and 2011 were used, but 2010 was preferentially selected.

This collection is a legacy product that is no longer supported. It may not meet current government standards. Toporama is a digital topographic reference product using CanVec as source data. Developed by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), Toporama covers the entire area of Canada's landmass and provides symbolic information in a geo-referenced raster format (GeoTIFF).
