Forest birds are diverse in Ontario, with many species being common or very common on the Bruce Peninsula (i.e., American Redstart, Black-throated Green Warbler, Pileated Woodpecker. etc.). The national park monitors breeding forest birds (mostly songbirds and woodpeckers) with pre-programmed automated recorders at 20 sites (four routes), split equally between deciduous and coniferous forests.

Beavers were formerly extirpated from the Bruce Peninsula, but have re-colonized the area after a two century absence, making significant changes to the park landscape. Bruce Peninsula National Park monitors active lodges by counting food caches during helicopter surveys in the fall, just before the freeze-up.

Redback salamanders have a long lifespan, small home ranges and high site fidelity. They breathe entirely through their skin and the tissue lining in their mouths, which makes them sensitive to air- and waterborne pollutants, and thus a good indicator of environmental quality. Bruce Peninsula National Park measures salamander abundance using artificial cover boards at four sites.

The data consists of temperature indices based on homogenized daily maximum and minimum temperatures at 338 locations across Canada, and of precipitation indices based on adjusted daily rainfall, daily snowfall and daily precipitation amounts at 463 locations across the country. These indices were selected for their relevance to social and economic impact assessment in Canada and for the insights they could provide regarding changes in extreme climate conditions. Please refer to the papers below for detailed information regarding the adjustment procedures and the trends in the indices.

This dataset contains temperature data taken from 11 streams or rivers in Forillon National Park since 2008. Temperature data are collected hourly by a HOBO probe installed on the watercourse’s bottom in June and removed in September or October. For each watercourse studied, the temperature probe is installed at the benthic invertebrate community sampling site (CABIN) close to the site at which the electrofishing is carried out. Temperature data are particularly useful for assessing the quality of brook trout aquatic ecosystems in Forillon National Park.
