The Cordilleran Region is divided into three large linear zones called the Eastern System, the Interior System and the Western System. Each system is further divided into areas and subdivided into mountains, ranges, plateaus, hills, valleys, trenches, basins and plains. Each has its own geological and physiographic characteristics.

This map depicts Canada's 2 great parts: the Shield and the Borderlands. The Shield consists of a core of old, massive, Precambrian crystalline rocks and covers half the country including most of Quebec and Ontario, the majority of Nunavut and Manitoba and all of northern Saskatchewan and eastern Northwest Territories. The Borderlands regions are formed by younger rocks and surround the Shield. The Borderlands' 7 physiographic regions include: the Appalachians in Atlantic Canada, the St. Lawrence Lowlands in southern Quebec and Ontario, the Interior Plains in central and northern Canada, The Cordillera in Western Canada and 3 arctic regions: Arctic Coastal Plain, Arctic Lowlands and Innuitian.

Canada has seventeen geological provinces consisting of a shield, platforms, orogens and continental shelves. Exploration in the period 1731 to 1757 was dominated by the rapid thrust of French exploration into the western interior of Canada, particularly by Pierre Gaultier de la Vérendrye and his five sons who made nine expeditions between 1731 to 1743. As well, the map shows the exploration routes of other explorers sponsored either by New France or by England: Mallet (1739), De Niverville (1751), Henday (1754 to 1755) and Smith and Waggoner (1756 to 1757). The map also shows the extent of territory known to Europeans and the navigation of all exploration routes in the period 1651 to 1760. The historical names found on the map are derived from contemporaneous maps and written documents of the period.

The sensitivity of peatlands to climate warming is shown on this map. Peatlands are massive deposits of peat, a material consisting largely of organic residue that acts as a natural sink for carbon. With global warming, however, they have the potential to become immense sources of greenhouse gases, and contribute significantly to further warming. The geographic areas where peatland will be most affected are the Hudson Bay lowlands, the Mackenzie River valley region and the northern parts of Alberta and Manitoba.
