Grain-based and vegetable-based products are staple foods consumed in Canada. These are products of agricultural commodities and may contain pesticide residues introduced from the environment or if the crops were treated with pesticides in the field, during transport and/or during storage to prevent damage from insects, moulds or other pests. These products may also contain levels of metals from environmental sources. Though metals such as arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury are not permitted to be added to foods, and manufacturers are responsible for measures aimed at reducing accidental introduction of these elements in foods (for example, from lead solder in steel equipment), their presence is expected in foods, at very low levels, primarily as a result of their natural presence in the environment.
Metals are naturally-occurring elements that may be present in very low amounts in rock, water, soil, or air. Finding these substances in food products is not unexpected as trace levels generally reflect normal accumulation from the environment. They may be present in finished foods due to their presence in the ingredients used to manufacture those foods, and/or may be unintentionally incorporated along the food production chain. Metals of highest concern to human health include arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury and these have been shown to have effects on human health following long term exposure.
To be healthy, we need to eat a variety of foods, especially fresh fruits and vegetables. Pesticides play an important role in making sure there is enough food for everyone, by protecting crops from pests like insects, weeds, and fungal diseases. While pesticides help protect our food supply, some people have concerns about pesticide residue that may be on the food they eat.
The main objectives of the 2013-2014 Children's Food Project (CFP) were to:
•assess the compliance status for pesticide residues in infant foods;
•assess the level of veterinary drug residues in infant foods containing meat; and
•collect data on chemical hazards in infant foods for use by Health Canada in health risk assessments of infant foods.
In the 2013-2014 CFP, a total of 204 pureed infant foods and juices (0-2 years) were purchased in the Ottawa, Ontario and Gatineau, Quebec areas. Samples were analyzed for pesticide residues, veterinary drug residues, and metals. In total, 643 analytical tests were performed leading to over 92 000 individual results.
The main objective of the 2017 CFP was to collect data and assess the compliance of infant foods to Canadian standards for residues of pesticides and metals. Previous years have analyzed pesticides, metals, veterinary drug residues, aflatoxins and environmental contaminants. In the 2017 CFP, a total of 534 samples of infant and toddler foods were purchased in the Ottawa, Ontario and Gatineau, Quebec areas between April 1, 2017 and March 31, 2018. These samples included infant cereal, fruit and vegetable purees, infant and toddler grain-based snacks and juices.
A pesticide incident is a negative effect (adverse reaction) to humans, animals (pets or livestock) or the environment (plants or wildlife) that can result from being exposed to a pesticide.

This dataset contains measurements of pesticide concentrations in stream water samples collected at selected streams in Ontario. The Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) and Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) jointly collaborate to monitor pesticides in selected tributaries in southern Ontario. There are currently 19 monitoring sites within watershed or predominately agricultural land. The data includes: * Location of 21 stations (19 of which are currently active) * Pesticide concentration levels

The main objectives of the 2018 CFP were to:
•Collect data and assess the compliance of infant foods to Canadian standards for residues of veterinary drugs, pesticides and metals
•Collect baseline data on the levels of aflatoxin M1 in infant foods and formula containing milk
In the 2018 CFP, a total of 143 samples of infant and toddler foods were purchased in the Ottawa, Ontario and Gatineau, Quebec areas. These samples included dairy and soy infant formula, pasta, baby/toddler meals containing meat, baby/toddler meals containing dairy and pureed infant food containing meat. Samples were analyzed for pesticide residues, veterinary drug residues, metals and aflatoxin M1 (in dairy-based samples).
