Glaciers are an important water source in mountainous areas and significantly influence the hydrology of the watershed. Glaciers worldwide serve as indicators of climate change and have been decreasing in size at an accelerating rate since the mid-1980s. Data are collected from the Athabasca glacier in Jasper National Park using an array of drilled poles across the glacier surface to calculate the glacier net mass balance (the net gain or loss of snow/ice in a given year) and extent in order to provide a glacier profile over time.

The map shows the location of glaciers and ice caps and also indicates the rivers and the lakes, which are fed by a glacier (or an ice cap) meltwater. The purpose of this plate is to identify those streams which are fed by glacier meltwaters. Because of the scale of the map, many minor glaciers have not been shown and, hence, streams fed by such glaciers are not depicted as being glacier fed. The proportion of glacier-derived to non-glacier-derived water decreases as one goes downstream from the glaciers.

Nunavut’s cold climate makes it a territory consisting of mostly barren land and permafrost. Permafrost is soil or rocks whose temperature remains at or below the freezing point for a long period of time. Glaciers, a mass of snow and ice that does not melt from year to year prevail in the Innuitian Mountains. Permanent sea ice occurs in the northern part of the Arctic Ocean.

"The Glacier Atlas of Canada is a collection of maps produced as part of the Canadian Glacier Inventory Project. This project was initiated as part of Canada's contribution to the International Hydrological Decade (1965 to 1974). Although publication of this map series was suspended in the mid-seventies and gaps remain to be filled for some coverage areas, what has been created for this series thus far should prove useful in some aspects of glacier research. These map plates display glaciers and glacier regions.
