MODIS-Aqua Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) was acquired from the NASA Ocean Biology Processing Group at processing Level-3 (version 2018), 4-km resolution, where Chl-a concentration was calculated using the OC3/OCI method. The months of January and December were excluded from this dataset, as data in the winter months at higher latitudes are missing due to low sun angle preventing acquisition. The monthly geometric mean value at all pixels was calculated for individual years, then the geometric mean and geometric standard deviation factor of chlorophyll-a were calculated by month from these images. These methods of calculating mean and standard deviation were used due to the log-normal distribution of chlorophyll-a.

Chlorophyll-a (mg/m2) time series at the 3 fixed stations and 46 stations, grouped into transects, of the Atlantic Zonal Monitoring Program (AZMP) under the Quebec region responsibility. The mean integrated chlorophyll-a data (0-100 m) of the last ten years are displayed as 2 layers, one for the June survey (2011-2019. 2020 not sampled), another for the autumn survey (2011-2020). A third layer shows the positions of the fixed stations of the program (Anticosti Gyre, Gaspé Current and Rimouski).

This record contains two-weekly minimum sea ice concentration images of the Canadian Beaufort Sea at 1.1 km resolution. The dataset originated from the Canadian Ice Service (CIS) Digital Archive weekly regional charts for the western Arctic (See “additional credit” for a link to these data), created by synthesis of remotely-sensed, ship and airborne observations (Fequet, 2005). These vector ice charts were gridded at 1.1 km resolution and aggregated into two-week composites by calculating the minimum sea-ice concentration at each grid cell over each two-week interval in each year. Week numbers were defined using the ISO 8601 convention, and sea-ice concentration isrepresented in tenths (with 0/10 corresponding to an ice-free pixel, ranging to 10/10 corresponding to 100% pixel coverage with sea-ice).

PEI National Park samples Chlorophyll-a to measure aquatic productivity in four freshwater ponds. The sampling is carried out on an hourly basis between May-October each year using YSI sonde data loggers. In PEINP, all freshwater ponds are shallow (maximum depth is 4.5 m) and non-stratifying. Chlorophyll-a is used to assess primary productivity in freshwater ponds at PEI National Park.

The park monitors water quality on Clear Lake by sampling total phosphorus, Chlorophyll-a, oxygen consumption in the hypolimnion, and mean total phosphorus in the inflow streams. Nutrient and oxygen parameters will continue to change due to nutrient stress levels in the lake and thus, the targets and thresholds will change.

A chlorophyll fluorescence time series was collected at various locations around the coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada for monitoring phytoplankton concentrations. A Wetlabs ECO fluorometer was deployed every few months on a schedule depending on season and sensor availability. The instrument hung by a chain attached to the side of the buoy, or dock, depending on location, and measured chlorophyll using the fluorescence emission at 695nm. The instrument also measured turbidity by detecting the scattered light at 700nm.

The objective of this project was to gather data to develop a model of the food web of the lower trophic levels of the nearshore area of the Beaufort Sea. Sampling took place from 2005 to 2008 using the CCGS Nahidik. The multidisciplinary character of the Nahidik program produced measurements of biology/ecology (primary production, phytoplankton, zooplankton, benthos, fish), chemical and physical oceanography, contaminants, geology and hydro acoustics. The data were collected in July and August of each year.

MODIS-Aqua night long-wave Sea Surface Temperature (SST) images were acquired from the NASA Ocean Biology Processing Group at processing Level-2 (version 2018), 1-km resolution, spanning the period 2003-01-01 to 2020-12-31. Image pixels were aligned and mapped to a regular grid using the SeaDAS program, retaining all pixels with a quality level of ‘1’ or lower, which is recommended for scientific analysis. The monthly mean value at all pixels was calculated for individual years, and used to produce maps of the monthly climatological mean and standard deviation of SST. Additionally, the number of occurrences of valid data at each pixel over the period of observation were calculated.
