The Geological Atlas of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin was designed primarily as a reference volume documenting the subsurface geology of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. This GIS dataset is one of a collection of shapefiles representing part of Chapter 11 of the Atlas, Devonian Beaverhill Lake Group of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin, Figure 16d, Waterways and Souris River Lithofacies. Shapefiles were produced from archived digital files created by the Alberta Geological Survey in the mid-1990s, and edited in 2005-06 to correct, attribute and consolidate the data into single files by feature type and by figure.

The field plots were used to help during the photo interpretation process. The temporary plots provided essential information to interpreters to relate photo observed attributes with field measurements. The field work for the inventory was carried out during the winter of 2004/2005 with the project delivered by the contractor in October 2005. Delineation was based on 1:10,000 black and white photography acquired by the City of Whitehorse in 2001.

Almost all of Canada’s population is concentrated in a narrow band along the country’s southern edge. Nearly 80% of the total population lives within the 25 major metropolitan areas, which represent only 0.79% of the total area of the country.
