April 2024 – Political instability, conflict and natural disasters have left about 40.7 million people across the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Syria in need of humanitarian assistance. Populations face insecurity, malnutrition, and limited access to clean water and adequate sanitation. Also, hunger, displacement and conflict increase the risk of sexual and gender-based violence, especially for the most vulnerable.

With GAC’s support, this project provides a multi-sectoral response targeting an estimated 105,978 people in DRC and Syria. Project activities include: (1) screening, referring, and treating girls and boys (under 5 years old) suffering from acute malnutrition; (2) training local stakeholders on promoting good nutrition practices for children under 5 years old; (3) providing access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene training and supplies to health and nutrition centers and communities; (4) providing services and referrals for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence; and (5)integrating messaging and information to raise awareness on sexual and gender-based violence (GBV), including how to report and access care across activities.

With GAC’s support, UNICEF provides life-saving health and nutrition interventions for children and pregnant and lactating women to support the treatment, growth, and development of healthy children.

Project activities include: (1) providing at least 4,000,000 primary healthcare consultations to vulnerable populations; (2) providing approximately 765,000 patients with sexual and reproductive healthcare services; (3) providing disease case management in areas of response; (4) providing malnutrition screening and therapeutic feeding care to children under the age of five; and (5) distributing non-food item kits including bed nets, and sanitation supplies, specifically targeting pregnant and lactating women, and children under the age of five.

The beneficiaries include pregnant women, survivors of SGBV, and women accessing family planning services.

Project activities include: (1) strengthening community-based screening and treatment models to make care more accessible to families; (2) training community health workers and local health providers to provide woman-centric counselling and support for pregnant women regarding vitamin supplementation; (3) promoting widespread educational campaigns providing culturally sensitive information about the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months with lactation support; (4) facilitating the adoption of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI) in health facilities; and (5) developing comprehensive programs that provide continuous support and education to mothers during antenatal and postnatal periods.

Project activities include: (1) providing basic food commodities and water; (2) providing essential non-food items such as blankets, mattresses and hygiene kits; (3) providing primary healthcare in emergency shelters; (4) maintaining UNRWA shelters, including installation of water sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities, to provide essential protection for displaced persons; and (5) accounting for persons with special needs in emergency response including children, women, elderly and pregnant and lactating women.

Project activities include: (1) distributing food and cash-based transfers; (2) providing supplementary feeding for children under the age of five years, and pregnant and lactating people; and (3) providing logistical support and enabling access to the most remote and challenging locations.
