Grants and Contributions
About this information
In June 2016, as part of the Open Government Action Plan, the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat (TBS) committed to increasing the transparency and usefulness of grants and contribution data and subsequently launched the Guidelines on the Reporting of Grants and Contributions Awards, effective April 1, 2018.
The rules and principles governing government grants and contributions are outlined in the Treasury Board Policy on Transfer Payments. Transfer payments are transfers of money, goods, services or assets made from an appropriation to individuals, organizations or other levels of government, without the federal government directly receiving goods or services in return, but which may require the recipient to provide a report or other information subsequent to receiving payment. These expenditures are reported in the Public Accounts of Canada. The major types of transfer payments are grants, contributions and \'other transfer payments\'.
Included in this category, but not to be reported under proactive disclosure of awards, are (1) transfers to other levels of government such as Equalization payments as well as Canada Health and Social Transfer payments. (2) Grants and contributions reallocated or otherwise redistributed by the recipient to third parties; and (3) information that would normally be withheld under the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act.

Scaling and circularity of high‑nickel cathodes for next‑generation Li‑ion batteries
1035021
The project will develop and industrialize nickel‑rich layered‑oxide cathode active materials that deliver high-energy density with reduced cobalt content, and will validate their performance in industry‑relevant cell formats. Hydro-Québec’s Centre of Excellence for Transportation Electrification and Energy Storage and the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) will collaborate on material design, pilot synthesis, electrode engineering and cell manufacturing to accelerate scale‑up. The NRC’s efforts will focus on controlled particle morphology, compositional tuning and surface engineering via targeted dopants and conformal coatings, while the Centre will optimize slurry recipes and continuous roll‑to‑roll coating, drying and calendering to produce uniform, high‑quality electrodes. Parallel workstreams will develop low‑impact recycling routes and demonstrate the incorporation of recycled nickel‑rich active material into complete cells, supporting a sustainable pathway to commercialization.

Characterization of microplastics in wetlands of the Fraser estuary to support predictive modelling
1035910
Estuarine wetlands provide vital ecosystem services, but are experiencing dramatic global losses. A pilot project at Sturgeon Bank in the Fraser Estuary is exploring the use of dredged sediment for marsh restoration. However, the effects of potential contamination of the dredged sediments by microplastics and leachates on project success remains poorly understood. At the same time, trapping of particulates by wetland vegetation offers promise for nature-based solutions designed to beneficially sequester microplastics. This Project will characterize microplastics in sediments at Sturgeon Bank, examine the relative distributions in dredgeate, mudflats and vegetated salt marshes, investigate contaminant leaching from microplastics, and determine UV weathering rates. This Project will also support informed decision-making for wetland restoration, enhance understanding and predictive modelling of microplastics fate and transport, and guide beneficial use of dredged sediment.
