Grants and Contributions
About this information
In June 2016, as part of the Open Government Action Plan, the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat (TBS) committed to increasing the transparency and usefulness of grants and contribution data and subsequently launched the Guidelines on the Reporting of Grants and Contributions Awards, effective April 1, 2018.
The rules and principles governing government grants and contributions are outlined in the Treasury Board Policy on Transfer Payments. Transfer payments are transfers of money, goods, services or assets made from an appropriation to individuals, organizations or other levels of government, without the federal government directly receiving goods or services in return, but which may require the recipient to provide a report or other information subsequent to receiving payment. These expenditures are reported in the Public Accounts of Canada. The major types of transfer payments are grants, contributions and \'other transfer payments\'.
Included in this category, but not to be reported under proactive disclosure of awards, are (1) transfers to other levels of government such as Equalization payments as well as Canada Health and Social Transfer payments. (2) Grants and contributions reallocated or otherwise redistributed by the recipient to third parties; and (3) information that would normally be withheld under the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act.

Advancement of Surface Mobility Traction Drives (SMTD)
25STDPX24
Sustainable surface transportation of large elements (e.g. cargo, crew, etc.) over large distances on the Moon requires the use of traction drive systems. The specific combination of large cargo elements, challenging terrain (e.g. large slopes, abrasive regolith), and extended life in both vacuum and the extreme Lunar temperature environment exceed the capabilities of existing state-of-the-art terrestrial traction drive systems. MDA Space is proposing to develop a traction drive system to meet the demanding mission requirements of known and forecast Lunar rovers. Key market differentiators will be a traction drive system exhibiting high speed and torque capabilities, and a long life with no maintenance intervention, which can withstand the challenging Lunar night and regolith environments. Potential customers include the Lunar Utility Vehicle, NASA’s Lunar Terrain Vehicle (LTV), the European Lunar Polar Sample Return (LPSR) mission, and potentially pressurized rover missions.

Robotics Servicing System (RSS) Arm-joint Development
20STDPK16
(20STDPK16) Today we are at the birth of an emerging spinoff market of Commercial On-Orbit Servicing (OOS). MDA's vision is to penetrate this market by positioning itself to be a global leader in OOS robotics solutions for customers' space servicing vehicles. As part of the development of this system, MDA has identified the arm joint as a key enabler because it will provide performance to enable dexterous robotic servicing at a far lower recurring price.
In this project, to raise joint technology from TRL 4 to TRL 6, MDA will:
• Perform preliminary design of flight joint
• Build & test an Engineering Model in simulated operational environments, including thermal, vacuum, etc.
The successful robotic arm technology will potentially create a new commercial product base for Canada in robotics.

Next Generation Mini LIDAR
17STDPD38
A light detection and ranging (lidar) 3D imaging sensor uses lasers to produce representations of an environment or object. Lidar is crucial for robotic navigation technologies. A small, low-cost, lighting-immune 3D sensor is highly desired for potential future planetary rover missions.
Neptec is proposing the development of a next-generation miniaturized lidar platform which addresses customer needs and future trends in both terrestrial and space markets. This will be accomplished through the manufacture and testing of two mini lidar prototypes, one focusing on performance and readiness for flight, and the other prioritizing miniaturization over performance. These projects will leverage Neptec's experience and expertise in developing lidar systems for space, using the successful TriDAR as a foundation for the proposed architecture.
